Title: 49 Video Game Movies In The Works: How Many Of Them Will Actually Come Out?
Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2025 04:05:00 -0700
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/video-game-movies-in-the-works/2900-5059/
Like the seemingly unending comic book movie craze, Hollywood loves to find a type of film that it can turn into the next big cultural touchstone. Over the years, we've seen movies based on video games attempt to reach that level, with varying levels of success. We've seen adaptations of games for decades, but, to be fair, a lot of these were awful adaptations. Many of them missed the point of the source material and were clumsily executed--although we'll always have a soft spot for the 1994 Street Fighter movie--but lately, we've seen some big changes in this genre. The Super Mario Bros. Movie took the world by storm when it was released, earning an obscene amount of cash at the box office, while the Uncharted and both Sonic the Hedgehog movies were also successful. With fresh new IPs to option, dozens of video game movies have been announced over the last couple of years, and while production is moving swiftly on several of them, many more appear to be trapped in the lowest levels of development hell. We're hopeful that we'll see some progress on these long-in-development films, but until Hollywood says otherwise, here's a deep dive into the video game movies that could be showing at your local cinema in the future. If there's not an attached release date or it's not a sequel, though, keep in mind these could also just never be made in the end. 1. Elden RingNot only is an Elden Ring movie officially in development at powerhouse distributor A24, but the project will be written and directed by Alex Garland of Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Civil War fame. Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin--who helped to develop the lore of the Elden Ring video game--is also involved as a producer on the movie project. 2. HelldiversAnnounced at CES 2025, Helldivers is one of two projects in development currently through Sony and its subsidiary Columbia Pictures. Helldivers is essentially a spiritual successor to Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers film, and is set in a future where humanity worships freedom and the concept of managed democracy. The games have a cheeky sense of humor, and the studio behind them would love to see several A-list celebrities in the movie--provided that they're killed off in hilariously over-the-top scenes. 3. The Mortuary AssistantOne of the few adaptations on this list not stuck in development hell, production on indie horror game The Mortuary Assistant recently kicked off. Jeremiah Kipp will direct the movie--which stars Gossip Girl and Arrow star Willa Holland in the lead--and the filmmaker envisions this project as a companion piece to the game that will flesh out its lore further. 4. Watch DogsMore than 10 years after it was first announced, filming finally began on Watch Dogs in July, a series of open-world games published by Ubisoft and featuring hacktivist gameplay. Directed by Mathieu Turi (The Deep Dark), the film Tom Blyth and Sophia Wilde. Additional casting details or a release date have yet to be revealed.Principal photography wrapped up in September, and the project is now in its post-production phase. 5. Sonic the Hedgehog 4With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 being massively profitable, another sequel was inevitable. Earlier this year, Paramount has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will be racing into theaters on March 19, 2027, but details are being kept under wraps for now. 6. The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a smash-hit at the box office when it first debuted, and naturally, a sequel is on the way. This is currently scheduled to arrive in April 2026, but further details on it haven't been revealed yet. 7. Death StrandingHideo Kojima's Death Stranding takes place in a fascinating universe, one where an extinction-level event has almost wiped out humanity and where being caught out in the rain is a painful death sentence. It's also weird as hell, packed with some very recognizable Hollywood faces, and it has no shortage of material to explore. The feature film adaptation was announced back in 2022, and in December 2023, film and television company A24 officially revealed its partnership with Kojima Productions to bring Death Stranding to life… or Death.Kojima has big plans for this IP, as not only is he involved in the production of the Death Stranding movie, but he's also planning to create a Death Stranding film universe. 8. Untitled Death Stranding Animated MovieNot only is a live-action Death Stranding movie in development, so too is an "adult-targeted" animated movie. This one is still in the early stages of development, but what we do know so far is that Aaron Guzikowski--writer of the 2013 Denis Villeneuve movie Prisoners--will work on the screenplay and it'll be tonally similar to Predator: Killer of Killers and the upcoming John Wick animated prequel. 9. The MediumHorror games make for great movie adaptations--like Silent Hill and Five Nights at Freddy's to name a few--and Bloober Team's 2021 game The Medium is also headed to the big sccreen. This project is currently in development underUntil Dawn writer Gary Dauberman's Coin Operated production company and a search is now on to find a writer and a director. 10. The Legend of ZeldaRelease date: March 26, 2027A live-action Legend of Zelda movie is on the way, and while it's still in an early pre-production phase, the co-production between Nintendo and Sony Pictures is scheduled to arrive on May 7, 2027. The movie has also found its lead actors, as as Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason, and Link will be portrayed by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. 11. Resident EvilAdmittedly, most Resident Evil live-action adaptations have been charmingly bad, while the rest of them have simply been downright terrible. For the next stab at the franchise--currently scheduled to land in cinemas in 2026--Barbarian director Zach Cregger is aiming to deliver something completely different to Paul W.S. Anderson's series of Resident Evil movies, as the filmmaker recently expressed a desire to make something closer to the terrifying tone of the classic games. 12. OutRunAn adaptation of Sega's classic racing game series is in development, and while details on it are slim, we do know that Michael Bay is attached to direct. The first game originally debuted in arcades in 1986 and was subsequently ported to Master System, Genesis, Saturn, and PC over the years, with several sequels following in its wake. The last entry in the series was OutRun Online Arcade, which was developed by Sumo Digital and was released in 2009. 13. Split FictionOne of the best games of the year has only been out for a few months, and Hollywood is already looking to bring it to the big screen. Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney is currently set to star in it, with Jon M. Chu directing. Work has begun on a script, with Deadpool and Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick working on it. 14. BioShockNetflix announced a BioShock movie back in 2022, and while the project appears to be in limbo, and The Boys and Novacaine actor Jack Quaid recently said that he would "love" to be in it. Other than that tidbit of dream casting, details on the movie have been locked up tight, but a 2024 report did claim that budget cuts at Netflix had forced the movie project to be "reconfigured" into a smaller and more personal film. 15. Just CauseJust Cause, a series of open-world video games where character development takes a backseat to gloriously over-the-top explosions, is the perfect vehicle for a gratuitously violent popcorn blockbuster with a bloated pyrotechnics budget. It has been a long time since we've heard any news on the project, as in 2017, the film was set to be directed by Brad Peyton and would star Jason Momoa. Peyton eventually dropped out and was replaced by Michael Dowse (Stuber), but since then, there's been nothing but radio silence on this project. 16. Just DanceWhile the heyday of dancing movies is long over, there might still be room for Ubisoft's infectiously fun Just Dance series to shine on the silver screen. The only problem here is that after production company Screen Gems won the motion picture rights to Just Dance all the way in 2019, we've heard next to nothing on the status of this project. 17. Five Nights at Freddy's 2If you'd correctly guessed that a film based on a video game series about homicidal animatronic food mascots would go on to break box office records, then we'd really like you to pick our next lottery numbers. A Five Nights at Freddy's sequel was inevitable, and it'll be released on December 5. If you'd like to get ready for Freddy, you can check out the first trailer for the horror movie right now. 18. Martha is DeadDon't let the title fool you, because this isn't a Batman prequel movie! Instead, Martha is Dead is a creepy thriller set against the backdrop of Italy during World War 2. As the twin sister of Martha, who was recently discovered drowned and dead in a lake, players had to navigate a tangled web of mystery as the Allied war machine edged closer to home. The game developer, LKA, has teamed up with UK publisher Wired Productions and Swedish film production company Studios Extraordinaires for this film project. 19. Metal Gear SolidKong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts's Metal Gear Solid project has been gestating for close to a decade now, and it looks increasingly likely that it's stuck in development hell. Updates have been few and far between, with the last notable mention of the film being in 2022 when Oscar Isaac--who is attached to play Solid Snake--mentioned that the focus was on finding a good story to do the legendary game justice. 20. Mortal Kombat 2Get ready for round 2! 2021's Mortal Kombat movie generated an impressive $84.4 million at the box office, and for the sequel, the original--and surviving--cast will all be making a comeback. Mortal Kombat 2 once again features Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, and this time, Karl Urban joins them as brash Hollywood A-lister Johnny Cage. The first trailer has also been uploaded for the sequel, showing off plenty of action between multiple fighters as they battle for control of the realms. 21. Pac-ManWe've had Pac-Man cartoon series, a starring role in a Futurama episode, and a villainous turn in an Adam Sandler film, and at long last, Bandai Namco's pellet-chomping hero is ready for top billing. A live-action project based on an original idea from Sonic the Hedgehog movie producer Chuck Williams has been announced, but there have been no further details revealed yet on the potential cast, director, or a release date since the 2022 announcement. 22. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu sequel2019's Detective Pikachu had a great box office run, sleuthing up an impressive $433 million worldwide. A sequel starring the gumshoe electric rat was a safe bet, but several years later, details on the sequel have been hard to come by. A representative for Legendary Entertainment said that the film is still "in active development," but beyond that, details on this movie are scarcer than a shiny Pokemon in the wild. 23. Poppy PlaytimeWe might be looking at a new boom in horror movies starring sadistic mascots after the success of Five Nights at Freddy's, and you can add Poppy Playtime to that list. The original game is set in an abandoned toy factory inhabited by killer collectibles, and for the film adaptation, Studio71 is handling production duties. The studio is well-known for its work on the recent VHS horror movies, making this company a good fit for the unique terror of Poppy Playtime. 24. PortalIt has been a long time since there has been any movement on Portal, Valve's wonderfully challenging game of interdimensional puzzles, but producer JJ Abrams really wants you to know that the film project isn't dead yet. Or at least, it was definitely still being worked on in 2021 when Abrams mentioned that a script was being written. Is the film cake a lie? Only time will tell. 25. RabbidsIt was only a matter of time until the Minions of video games, Rabbids, were optioned for a film deal. Film production company Lionsgate landed the movie rights to Ubisoft's Rabbids in 2019, but like several other video game movie projects, this appears to be another gaming IP stuck in development hell, much to the relief of parents across the world. 26. OutlastAn incredibly terrifying series of first-person survival-horror games, Outlast is coming to the big screen as part of a deal between Lionsgate and developer Red Barrels. Still at an early stage of development, writer JT Perry--who has worked on the stories for the games themselves--will be penning the screenplay. 27. Return to Silent HillThere are some lofty expectations for Return to Silent Hill, as not only is this psychological-horror movie rebooting the film series, but it's also taking a stab at adapting what many fans consider to be the best game in the franchise. Starring Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson, Return to Silent Hill is directed by Christophe Gans. The French film director brought Silent Hill to the big screen in 2006, and filming began in Germany and Eastern Europe in April 2023."Return to Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami's iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer," Gans said after it was announced that the distributor behind Terrifier 3, Cineverse, would distribute this film. 28. Saints RowAnother video game movie possibly stuck in development hell, there have been zero updates on the Saints Row project for several years now. At the time, writer Greg Russo said that his script was inspired by The Warriors and Escape from New York, and F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious) was set to direct it. 29. SifuJohn Wick creator Derek Kolstad announced his plans to adapt the hard-hitting action game Sifu to the big screen in 2022, bringing the bone-crunching brutality of this martial arts epic to life. While the story of a martial arts prodigy out for revenge is fairly standard stuff in the genre, Sifu's added twist is that the vengeance-driven protagonist is in possession of a magical talisman that can bring them back to life, but they'll age after each use. Kolstad envisions the film as John Wick meets M. Night Shyamalan's Old, which should make for an interesting action film if it ever gets greenlit. 30. Slime RancherSlime Rancher is one of the most adorable games around--and one of the highest-rated on Steam--as the core pitch of wrangling cute blobs on a distant alien planet makes for some engaging fun. Not much is known about this project yet, but what we do know is that the story of young rancher Beatrix LeBeau is being adapted by Story Kitchen, a production company set up by John Wick writer Derek Kolstad. 31. Space Channel 5One of the defining games of the Sega Dreamcast, Space Channel 5 might sound like an obscure property to revive as a movie, but this wacky game has an equally weird pitch that could put butts in seats. The film version has been described as a mix of comedy and dance, all set to the story of a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens. How? By using the power of viral dancing to save the day. So basically, TikTok: The Movie. 32. Space InvadersInvaders! From space! New Line Cinema announced in 2019 that the classic Taito arcade game was headed to a movie screen near you, but several years later, it looks like those hostile extraterrestrials might have gotten stuck in a black hole on the way. Mortal Kombat writer Greg Russo was hired to write the script back then, but there's been no word then about the status of this alien invasion project. 33. StrayCurrently in development at Annapur(r)na Animation, Stray is another recent game destined for a silver screen debut in the future. The original game mixed stealth and post-apocalyptic vibes, but with the neat twist of controlling an orange tabby cat looking for a way back home. Along the way, the cat crosses paths with the flying drone B12, an ally who helps the furry creature escape a city of robots and parasites. 34. Street FighterWe've had two live-action Street Fighter movies over the decades, one being so wonderfully awful that it's actually good, and the other one being downright terrible and devoid of any Tuesday memes whatsoever. Is the third time the charm then for this franchise? Talk to Me directors Duo Danny and Michael Philippou were originally attached to this project, but they dropped out, reportedly due to scheduling conflicts. 35. Streets of RageYet another project with a John Wick link to it, Sega's rough-and-tough Streets of Rage adaptation is once again a film that Derek Kolstad is involved with. An action-packed staple of the '90s, Streets of Rage was successfully revived several years ago for a fourth outing, and a new game in the series is on the way as part of Sega's new initiative to flex some retro muscles. 36. Talking TomIf there's one thing that Hollywood has proven over the years, it's that anything can be a movie--even a collection of mobile apps featuring anthropomorphic animals talking back to you. The jury is still out on whether a good Talking Tom movie is possible, and to make things even weirder, this live-action project from Outfit7 has recruited Assassin's Creed producer Jean-Julien Baronnet to help it make the leap from mobile to big screen. Baronnet is also the producer of the Rabbids Invasion television series, so this looks like a good fit. 37. Bendy and the Ink MachineWhat if Walt Disney ditched Mickey Mouse for blood-curdling horror? You'd have Bendy and the Ink Machine, a delightfully macabre send-up of classic animation full of devious puzzles to solve. With Five Nights at Freddy proving to be a huge hit at the box office, horror games are quickly being optioned by studios and this adaptation will be handled by Radar Pictures, the company behind the Jumanji reboots. Beyond that, not much else is known about the project other than Bendy creator Paul Crawford's pledge to make a "quality" film that honors the source material. 38. Comix ZoneComix Zone, a game for which advertisements were plastered over pretty much every Marvel and DC comic book in 1995, is another retro game property coming to the big screen eventually, maybe. First announced in 2022 and described as a loose adaptation of the game--which was inspired in turn by comic books of the era--the film will follow "a jaded comic book creator and a writer who find themselves sucked into the final issue of his popular series and must fight their way out of the printed pages to stop a supervillain hellbent on destruction”. Written by Mae Catt (Young Justice), the film is also aiming to explore the power of storytelling. 39. Clair Obscura: Expedition 33Before the game's arrival on PC and console, it was announced that a live-action adaptation was in development. While Clair Obscura: Expedition 33 has drawn eyes to its turn-based RPG action thanks to its impressive visuals, the game does have a fascinating plot that revolves around a deadly goddess awakening once a year to cause calamity amongst the surviving humans. "Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number. And everyone of that age turns to smoke and fades away," the official synopsis reads. "Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. Tomorrow she'll wake and paint 33. And tomorrow we depart on our final mission--Destroy the Paintress, so she can never paint death again." 40. Horizon Zero DawnSony is looking at a feature film adaptation of one of its biggest IPs, as while Horizon was originally lined up to get a live-action Netflix series, last year it was reported that the project wasn't moving forward due to workplace misconduct allegations surrounding The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman.Set in a post-apocalyptic future where human civilization has reverted back to a primitive state following a cataclysmic robot uprising, the film follows the outcast Aloy as she looks to unite the tribes of humanity to prepare for a massive threat that could wipe out all life on the planet if left unchecked. 41. Duke NukemIs the world ready for Duke Nukem's return? A relic of the video game past--for good and bad reasons--the legendary gunslinger is making his way to theaters in a film project from the producers behind Cobra Kai. This will be an entirely new production when compared to the ill-fated Duke Nukem project that was set to star John Cena, and it was first announced in 2022. Since then, there has been radio silence on the project and it has no names attached to direct, write, or star in it. 42. FirewatchCampo Santo's story-focused and solitary adventure game Firewatch might sound like an odd choice for a film adaptation, but producers Snoot Entertainment are aiming to bring the interactive piece of art to the big screen. No other details, such as casting announcements or tentative release window, have been revealed since the 2020 announcement, but at the time, Camp Santo co-founder Sean Vanaman had nothing but high praise for the project and the people attached to it. 43. Ghost of TsushimaBack in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima arrived to send off the PS4 generation in grand style. A samurai tale with gorgeous visuals and intense action, the game attracted the attention of John Wick director Chad Stahelski and was quickly added to his slate of projects. Don't expect to Ghost of Tsushima on the big screen soon, as the director is currently focused on a Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill as the legendary swordsman. Stahelski intends to create an "epic" atmosphere of samurai action while also seeing just how far he can "push the color palette" on this project. We also know that Sony is developing a Ghost of Tsushima anime spin-off, with this adaptation being handled by Demon Slayer studio Aniplex. 44. Gravity RushGravity Rush has managed to escape the pull of development hell since it was first announced in 2022, as work steadily continues on it. Anna Mastro (Secret Society of Second Born Royals) is reportedly the director, and at CES 2024, an entire five seconds of footage was seen during Sony's press conference. Unlike the anime-inspired 2012 game, this version of Gravity Rush appears to be taking a more realistic approach as it brings the gravity-defying world of Hekseville to life. 45. Iron LungBased on the 2022 horror game of the same name by David Szymanski, the adaptation of Iron Lung has already been written, directed, and produced by Mark Fischback AKA Markiplier, who's also starring in it. While it is complete, the movie doesn't have a release date yet, but the teaser trailer does look suitably bloody. If you've never played the game, Iron Lung is set in a universe where an event known as "The Quiet Rapture" has caused all known stars and habitable planets in the universe to vanish. After an ocean of blood is discovered on a lifeless moon, one convict is sent to explore the crimson waters from inside a rickety submarine. 46. Rider's RepublicUbisoft's extreme sports live-service game Rider's Republic is also getting a feature film adaptation, and it'll be helmed by Bad Boys: Ride or Die directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. Rider's Republic doesn't have much of a story to adapt, but the setting for the game--an extremely sporty festival set in the Alps where players can take part in a wide variety of activities--is being expanded on for this movie project. 47. Dead by DaylightFor anyone yearning for a good ol' slasher horror movie, you might want to keep your eyes peeled for Dead by Daylight. The longrunning multiplayer horror game has long been considered a love letter to cinematic terror, and its feature film adaptation will be produced by Blumhouse and James Wan (The Conjuring, Insidious). 48. Days GoneDays Gone was an interesting--but flawed--first-party game when it first launched on PS4 in 2019, and while it didn't reach the same levels of success as Marvel's Spider-Man or Ghost of Tsushima, it might be better suited for the silver screen. A tale of love, bikers, and zombies in a post-apocalyptic world, the script for this adaptation has been written by Sheldon Turner (X-Men: First Class and the Road House remake) and is said to have a modern-day Western feel to it. Sam Heughan (Outlander) is reportedly attached to play the protagonist Deacon St. John. 49. Exit 8Production on the movie adaptation of cult-classic Japanese horror game Exit 8 began shortly after it was first released on PC in 2023, and it'll be hitting theatres later this year. To be precise, it'll be coming to Japanese cinemas on August 29 via film distributor Toho, but an international release hasn't been revealed yet. The movie stars Kazunari Ninomiya as the seemingly doomed protagonist, who has to explore the infinite corridors of a Japanese subway station and observe the anomalies inside of it if he ever hopes to escape.
Title: Rainbow Six Siege Rengoku Event Returns For A Limited Time
Date: Thu, 31 Jul 2025 03:33:00 -0700
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/rainbow-six-siege-rengoku-event-returns-for-a-limited-time/1100-6533570/?ftag=CAD-01-10abi2f
The popular Rengoku event has returned to Rainbow Six Siege. Live now, and running until August 13, the limited-timed game mode--where two teams of five battle to capture an alter--offers players new game mechanics, specialized weapons, and unlockable cosmetics. That includes the first Masterpiece animated skin made available via the Rengoku event Memento. Like before, the Rengoku event tasks players with controlling a particular area of a map using shotguns and powerful kunai. These special throwable items can poison enemies, create barriers, start fires and more. A few new variants, like a freeze kunai, have also been included this time around. Players will need to plan their moves accordingly if they hope to be successful…or not, as part of the fun comes from the chaotic nature of a given match. No Rainbow Six Siege event is complete without some form of microtransaction. That same goes for this limited-timed mode. There are a few free items that can be unlocked by logging in during the event or rewarded via Twitch Drops. New event-based bundles for select operatives can also be purchased in the shop. And there’s a signature event bundle (that features a universal weapon skin) as well as a Masterpiece animated G36C skin for Ash and Lana, which comes as a reward for unlocking all of the Rengoku Collection items. Recent events and updates, including the Siege X release, have seen huge bumps in player count for the decade-old game. With the Rengoku event proving popular in the past, Ubisoft may expect a similar trend in player count throughout the coming weeks.Continue Reading at GameSpot
Title: Warhammer Publisher Says A "Cute" Bat Is Ruining Its Plans

Title: Xbox Game Pass Nearly Hit $5 Billion In Revenue, Says Microsoft

After ordering massive layoffs across the company earlier this month, Microsoft shared its report for investors at the end of its fiscal year. One of the bright spots for Microsoft was Xbox Game Pass, which had nearly $5 billion in annual revenue for the first time. The complete transcript of Microsoft's investor report is online, but it doesn't break down the specifics of Game Pass' milestone in terms of subscribers or even the specific revenue amount that it reached. Last year, Microsoft announced price hikes for Game Pass and introduced Xbox Game Pass Standard, which doesn't include day one access for the company's biggest games. That perk is reserved for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers.Following the release of the best-selling PlayStation games in the second quarter of 2025 in the US, Microsoft noted that it was "the top publisher on both Xbox and PlayStation this quarter," before crediting the cross-platform launches of Forza Horizon 5 and Oblivion Remastered for achieving that feat. Other Microsoft titles including Doom: The Dark Ages, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Minecraft also appeared as best-sellers on PlayStation's Q2 chart.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Title: Emma Stone and her weirdest director team up again for another surreal mini masterpiece
Date: 2025-07-31T08:13:48-04:00
Link: https://www.polygon.com/fantasy/617908/emma-stone-yorgos-lanthimos-beths-farm-jerskin-fendrix
At this point, you’re either in or out on Yorgos Lanthimos. The Greek filmmaker broke out with 2009’s Dogtooth, a warped and unsettling portrait of family, but a string of collaborations with Emma Stone turned him into a mainstream hitmaker who has never shed his weird side. After costarring in The Favourite, Stone went on to lead Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, the black-and-white short film Bleat, and the upcoming Bugonia, a retelling of Save the Green Planet that looks just as stylized and askew as the previous realities they’ve conjured together. But before Bugonia arrives later this year, the pair somehow found time to produce another short film: the music video for “Beth’s Farm.”
“Beth’s Farm” is the latest single from composer Jerskin Fendrix, who wrote the scores for Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Bugonia. The song, one of the many tracks off Fendrix’s upcoming album Once Upon A Time. . . In Shropshire, stars the musician and Stone as a pair of farmers who find their animals transformed into piles of mud. Together, they burn relics of the past in order to renew the flocks with lifeforce. Or something like that? In true Lanthimos fashion, the cryptic narrative maneuvers and bold images lend themselves to plenty of readings of the six-minute fantasy short. In press notes, Fendrix describes Once Upon A Time. . . In Shropshire “as a love letter to something that once existed — a shining, rose-tinted childhood and the lives that made it,” and the album “posits that grief is complex and memory is intoxicating.” Do with that as you will.
Watching the video for “Beth’s Farm” is the perfect appetizer for Bugonia, and a welcome reminder that Lanthimos is always gonna Lanthimos. Like Wes Anderson, the filmmaker operates in his own love-it-or-hate-it post-modern lane. Stone seems to be living for it, and is capable of clicking into whatever graphic vision the live-action cartoonist is cooking up next. It helps that “Beth’s Farm” is full of melancholy falsetto, backed by reverberating strings, making it a cinematic indie tune that triggers my Sufjan Stevens-loving heart. We love a sad bop.
“Art is often so one-dimensionally geared towards death,” Fendrix said in the notes. “Death is really, really, really complex. Sometimes it can be funny, and sometimes it’s kind of trivial, or relieving, or infuriating. I needed it to have all of that.”
Watch and listen to “Beth’s Farm” above, and keep an eye out for Once Upon A Time. . . In Shropshire when it arrives Oct. 10 — just a few weeks before Bugonia.
Title: Netflix’s The Sandman fleshes out one of the comic’s most mysterious characters
Date: 2025-07-30T16:45:25-04:00
Link: https://www.polygon.com/fantasy/617197/netflix-sandman-daniel-jacob-anderson-dream-death
The second and final season of Netflix’s The Sandman opens with Destiny (Adrian Lester), the eldest of the Endless, calling a family meeting. It’s a messy affair that involves a lot of the immortal siblings sniping at each other while complaining about how fractious they’ve become.
“The Endless dynamic mirrors sort of my own family dynamic, in that they’re not necessarily the people you would choose, but they are your family, and there is love there,” The Sandman showrunner Allan Heinberg told Polygon in a Zoom call. “If you are generous and you want to cultivate those relationships, it is within your power to do it.”
In the same spirit, Heinberg wanted to cultivate the relationship between Dream (Tom Sturridge) and a key character from the end of The Sandman comics, the most mysterious figure in the entire story. For that, he went to series author Neil Gaiman for permission to add some crucial context.
“It allowed us to go off-panel in terms of the comic book story,” Heinberg said. “I wanted to believe that here are the panels you didn’t get to see in the comic.”
[Ed. note: The rest of this article contains spoilers for the ending of The Sandman.]
The family gathering is a way for Destiny to execute his job of ensuring that things play out as they should, according to the book of fate he carries. Destiny sets in motion a Greek tragedy that ends with the death of his brother Dream because Dream runs afoul of the Fates in his quest to make amends for his callous treatment of the people he loves. But Heinberg asked Gaiman for permission to change a key aspect of the comics to make Dream’s fate feel a bit less inevitable, and said the author agreed with his idea for expanding on the story.
“The key with this arc was calling Neil up and saying ‘Are you OK with the back half of Destiny’s book being blank?’’ Heinberg said.
Because Dream’s fate isn’t written, Destiny makes it clear that while he will eventually die, how and when that happens will be determined by Dream’s actions. That uncertainty leads Dream and his allies on a quest to stop the forces aligned against him.
“Dream goes to his parents for help,” Heinberg said. “Dream goes to the Fates to see if he can bargain with them. These are all the things that [I] would do if I were caught in this situation. There’s not a stone I would leave unturned if my kingdom and my people and my realm depended on it. He’s that responsible. He’s that honorable.”
But Morpheus eventually realizes that the best thing he can do for the Dreaming is to transfer his power to an heir, Daniel Hall, the only human child ever conceived in the Dreaming. As soon as Morpheus dies, Daniel goes from being a baby to an immortal adult played by Interview with the Vampire star Jacob Anderson. Heinberg said casting Anderson was “a no-brainer.”
“The big surprise was meeting him and finding out that he’s a huge Sandman fan,” Heinberg said. “He knew exactly who Daniel was.”
Daniel is one of the most enigmatic characters in Gaiman’s comics, which don’t address what it means for one of the Endless to be reborn. Heinberg made things clearer in the series finale by drawing a parallel between Daniel and the remade nightmare The Corinthian, in that they are newborns who share some of their predecessors’ memories and nature.
“A lot of it was having to tell the actor, ‘You are not imitating the actor who is playing Dream, but he’s in there with you, if that makes sense,’ Heinberg said. “Jacob is such a fan of Tom’s, and such a student of the show, that you see him doing this incredible balancing act where he’s entirely himself, and also at times entirely Tom, and it’s all him. It’s all Jacob’s genius that he manages to pull it off without bringing your attention to it, without ever doing an imitation.”
Netflix told Heinberg that Daniel needed his own arc to define the show’s final episode, which only depicts Morpheus in a flashback. While most of the show’s supporting characters attend Morpheus’ funeral, Daniel becomes a sort of audience surrogate as he explores the limits of his new powers and tries to puzzle out his relationship to his mother, the denizens of the Dreaming, and the rest of the Endless.
“Our Daniel wants as many answers as everybody else does,” Heinberg said. “We sympathize with him, we love him, and as he moves into his new responsibilities, we move with him.”
The complete second season of The Sandman, episodes 1-11, are now streaming on Netflix. The bonus episode Death: The High Cost of Living will be released on July 31.
Title: MTG’s upcoming Spider-Man set is worrying draft players
Date: 2025-07-31T05:38:38-04:00
Link: https://www.polygon.com/mtg-magic-the-gathering/617889/marvel-spider-man-pick-two-draft-worrying
After diving into the depths of the universe with its space-opera-inspired set, Edge of Eternities, Magic: The Gathering will go back to its Universes Beyond for the much-anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man, releasing on Sept. 26, 2025. However, a recent announcement from MTG’s head designer, Mark Rosewater, has caused a stir among players of the Limited format, who are worried about how well this Spider-Man set will play in draft. When a player noticed that Marvel’s Spider-Man will have a smaller card pool compared to other sets, worrying about how this could affect the drafting experience, Rosewater answered on his blog that Marvel’s Spider-Man is the first MTG set designed with the new Pick Two draft format in mind. Players can thus expect to draft the upcoming set with only four people at the table (while a typical draft pod usually consists of eight players), each making two picks at a time out of a booster, instead of the usual single pick.Pick Two draft is a new format, designed to make the drafting experience faster and require fewer people to play. This novelty will be appreciated by anyone who is a dedicated Limited player and has had to cancel plans for a draft because that sweet sixth player couldn’t be found or dropped out at the last second. I also welcome the perspective of playing two drafts in the time it usually takes to finish one. However, competitive Limited players are also worrying about these changes, but their initial concerns were somewhat put off by the fact that, apparently, Pick Two draft would be only played at conventions and stores as a form of casual play.
Rosewater’s words regarding Marvel’s Spider-Man seem to imply that Wizards is already thinking about pushing Pick Two as an official way to play competitive draft. This, however, is not what worries Limited players most. Marvel’s Spider-Man will have only five draftable archetypes, compared to the usual ten. Archetypes are an essential component of any Limited experience. They inform and guide players’ decisions on what cards to pick in order to build a strong, functioning deck with complementary colors and good synergies. However, archetypes are not all made equal. Some will inevitably be stronger than others, and competitive players will gravitate towards drafting those to win their games. If Marvel’s Spider-Man has only five archetypes, and some will stand above others, the drafting experience will be impacted negatively. Players will fight over the strongest colors as usual, but with fewer color pairs being targeted, and two picks for each pack and only four packs at the table at the same time, this will escalate quickly. One player could easily dominate the table in terms of deck efficiency, and considering that the format is single-elimination, the experience for anyone who did not draft the top archetype could be pretty disheartening.
This is another aspect that may worry competitive Limited players, who are used to drafts that let them play at least three games in a Swiss-system tournament. If you lose a game, you still have a chance to rank high and get a prize, if there are any. It’s still unknown how or if Pick Two draft will be adapted for competitive play, but it’s possible that some hardcore Limited players will skip playing Marvel’s Spider-Man entirely, outside of casual games.
Title: Dig Donkey Kong Bananza? Check out this new hole game next
Date: 2025-07-30T17:55:05-04:00
Link: https://www.polygon.com/impressions/617442/mashina-hole-game-pc-recommendation
After pounding my way through Donkey Kong Bananza earlier this month, I declared that 2025 was a “big year for hole.” DK’s adventure was the third game I’d played this year (fourth actually, as I’d forgotten Netease’s Rusty Rabbit at the time) that took the childlike joy of digging in a sandbox and turned it into a creative gameplay hook. Today, that trend goes another layer deeper thanks to the well-timed Mashina.
Following up on last year’s striking Judero, Mashina is a new game from Talha and Jack Co. that continues the studio’s experiments with stop-motion animation. It stars an egg-shaped robot who finds herself on a mission to save her world by gathering minerals. How does she accomplish that? By digging holes, of course. While it’s a proudly lo-fi project that’s leagues apart from Nintendo’s latest in scope, Mashina is a chill chaser I needed after weeks of Donkey Kong Bananza’s loud and proud environmental destruction.
Structurally, Mashina’s closest parallel is Steamworld Dig. My job is to pop into a 2D mine and start digging with my drill in search of minerals. I fit as much as I can into my puzzle-like inventory, deposit them back at the surface, and earn skill points that help me move and dig more efficiently. At the same time, I’m also completing quests for some friendly robots above ground that reward me with more powerful drills and gadgets like teleporters. It’s the same progression hook that made A Game About Digging a Hole such a small hit earlier this year, but delivered by way of endearing bots.
There’s an inherent satisfaction to digging here as I build a system of interweaving tunnels underground, but a lot of rough edges to work around. I struggled with a clumsy building system that had me crafting mineral-transporting conveyor belts, and the general hook wore thin once I entered a grind-heavy third act, but Mashina isn’t ashamed of its imperfections. You can feel it in the lumpy landscapes, the primitive stop-motion cutscenes, the cast of misshapen misfits that looked like they stepped out of a Primus album cover. Even when it can all feel a little sloppy to play, it’s a match for the surreal quality of its patchwork visuals.
That’s the thing about claymation. What makes it so special as a form of animation is that you’re always aware of the human touches that make it possible. You can see the way a hand squeezed and prodded life into a hunk of clay. Mashina is a game defined by thumbprints, one that never lets you forget the scrappy work that went into its creation.
You could call it blue collar Bananza in that way. The moments that stuck with me most during my playthrough were when I was just casually digging around to the sound of a staticky radio station pumping out hypnotic grooves between DJs talking about the state of the poisoned world in soothing tones. I felt like a trucker driving across the country at 3 a.m., just listening to whatever broadcast the FM radio could pick up deep down the highway to stay awake. While Mashina’s thin story lacks the emotional resonance of Judero, it’s still occasionally transcendent in its own small ways. It’s a game for the night shift heroes toiling into the twilight hours just to make sure the world is still moving when everyone else wakes up.
Title: I have nothing negative to say about Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, other than that it ends too soon
Date: 2025-07-30T18:13:19-04:00
Link: https://www.polygon.com/review/617858/ninja-gaiden-ragebound-review
Tecmo’s Ninja Gaiden games are infamous for their difficulty, from the NES era trilogy of punishing side-scrolling action platformers to the modern Team Ninja games. The latest entry in that franchise, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, doesn’t strive to be that hard; instead, it focuses on offering a compelling set of combat tools, tight platforming and action, and a strong case for the Ninja Gaiden series to continue in 2D.
It’s a perfect entry point for new fans of Ninja Gaiden and a must-play for fans of 2D platforming action.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound stars Kenji Mozu, an apprentice of series star Ryu Hayabusa and a member of the Hayabusa village ninja clan. While Ryu is off adventuring in America, Kenji’s village is attacked by demons with designs on world domination by bringing their demon lord to power over humanity.
Kenji is a capable ninja on his own; he can dispatch most enemies with a slash of his katana, and overcome dangers and reach great heights using a somersault move called the Guillotine Boost that evokes Ryu Hayabusa’s 8-bit flips. That Guillotine Boost technique sees Kenji jump and bounce off enemies using his drawn sword. It’s instrumental in platforming challenges when leaping across bottomless pits, in boss battles, and when dealing with flying enemies.
Kenji’s abilities also include moves like a dodge roll, which offers brief invincibility, and Hypercharged Attacks, which let him power up for a deadly slash that can bisect foes and stun bosses. Hypercharge can be gained by killing certain enemies (who are noted by a glowing aura) or by sacrificing a sliver of health. And certain enemies and obstacles are best overcome with Hypercharge, which adds a strategic layer to combat. When faced with a hulking enemy, or one with a big shield, you’re going to want to, well, aura farm.
But Kenji’s abilities become much more interesting when he fuses with the spirit of a rival ninja clan member, Kumori. You play briefly as Kumori in Ragebound to learn her move set, which is more range-focused — she throws kunai, and has most of Kenji’s abilities too. The Kenji-Kumori coupling supercharges our hero, giving him a more complex and compelling set of tools. That includes multiple projectile options and a screen-clearing super move called a Ragebound Art.
Kenji and Kumori’s toolset continues to expand throughout Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound’s six to eight hours. There’s an in-game shop where you can purchase talismans that alter Kenji’s abilities and perks, and even swap out Kumori’s projectiles for different kinds of throwables. Even Ragebound Arts can be customized to fit your playstyle; you can swap the mass-damage attack for one that refills Kenji’s health or gives him a whirling shield of death, for example.
While Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound offers variety to play style, its levels are firmly structured. Enemies are placed or appear reliably, offering a clear critical path to pursue and a rhythm to the action. Even when experiencing each level for the first time, and playing sloppily, I could see very clear ways to improve, and a well-designed cadence with which to play. Ragebound is built with perfecting runs through levels in mind. And while I scored a solid B rating on many levels, I could see pathways to earn A and S rankings with practice and patience.
There’s plenty of replay in Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, plus optional ways to make the game harder for Ninja Gaiden enthusiasts/masochists. The in-game shop offers talismans that debuff Kenji, or make checkpointing less friendly. And Ragebound is pretty friendly in most regards. While some bosses are challenging, checkpointing is frequent and those checkpoints are smartly placed. The game generously grants health refills and spaces to take a breath. Levels reload very quickly, and you need only listen to a demon boss’ anti-human diatribe just once.
In addition to playing spectacularly, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is both graphically and aurally delightful. The Game Kitchen’s sprite work is fantastic; Kenji and Kumori animate fluidly and clearly, as do their enemies, which cleanly telegraph attacks. The game’s music stands out as an overall homage to ninja games of yore: There are notes of 8-bit Ninja Gaiden games and a bit of Shinobi’s blend of classic Japanese music and ’90s techno.
I have almost nothing negative to say about Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, other than that it ends too soon. But there are plenty of hidden secrets, side missions, and challenges to chase down after the story wraps. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a wonderful surprise, a game that captures the heart and soul of multiple eras of Ninja Gaiden games and manages to stand on its own, thanks to solid gameplay, tight controls, and a sharp presentation.
It’s ninja magic.
Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The game was reviewed on PS5 using a pre-release download code provided by publisher Dotemu.

Title: Shantae’s new costumes revealed in Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution
Date: Wed, 30 Jul 2025 15:00:19 +0000
Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2025/07/30/shantaes-new-costumes-revealed-in-shantae-advance-risky-revolution/
Hi, everyone. I’m Matt Bozon, director of the Shantae series. Today I’d like to fill you in on some exciting news about Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution, and share more details about the project!
If you’re familiar with the Shantae video game series, you might have heard that the original Shantae game had an unfinished sequel that never saw the light of day. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is that long-lost sequel. The original production ended in 2004, leaving the game only half finished – but the story didn’t end there.
A long-lost genie adventure
Twenty years later the original Shantae Advance team was reunited thanks to WayForward and Limited Run Games. We opened our archives, dove into old files, and set out to complete the project in its original code base using the tools of a bygone era. It was a labor of love, preservation, and improvisation. Now, the project is finally complete after over two decades, and will be “Ret-2-Go” on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
So, is Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution an old game or a new game? Is it game #2 in the series? Or game #6? Great questions. First and foremost, this is a brand-new, never-before-released Shantae game that was completed in 2025. But canonically, it’s the 2nd game in the series. The story takes place directly after the events of Shantae 1, but before Risky’s Revenge. The overall play style builds on lessons learned from all previous Shantae efforts. Combat and platforming are quick and snappy, writing and humor are on point, and quality-of-life elements are in line with the modern series.
As for features, the game contains three stand-alone experiences; First, there’s the modern version built for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which contains high-resolution portrait artwork, UI, and cinematics. Second is Classic Mode, which preserves all of 2004-era pixel artwork in its original resolution, and can be played as a stand alone game – effectively bonus content. Third is Battle Mode, which is a two-to-four player local party game in which players try to clobber each other and collect power ups, while navigating a rotating arena.

Shanae’s new costumes
But wait, there’s more. All of the above is included in the Standard Edition, but we’re also offering a Deluxe Edition, which contains three exclusive costumes made especially for fans. See Shantae as you’ve never seen her before – in her Relic Hunter Costume, High Voltage Costume, and Sizzle Armor Costume. Not only do these costumes change Shantae’s in-world sprites, but they also change her high-res dialogue portraits and the properties of her magic attacks. With the Deluxe Edition, all three of these costumes are available from the get-go. Let’s dig in:
The Relic Hunter Costume is inspired by Uncle Mimic’s old geezer friends, the Relic Hunters, who feature prominently in the game. For this costume we wondered what would happen if Shantae cosplayed as Uncle Mimic. She’d definitely want to make some adjustments of her own. What do you think? Wearing this adventurous getup grants a permanent power-up to Shantae’s Pike Ball Magic.
The High Voltage Costume grants hyper energy to Shantae’s electrical Storm Puff magic. The modern style and holographic ponytail are as nonsensical as it gets – right down to the “1994” graphical text on the pant leg – signifying the year that Shantae was created. We thought it would be fun to give her a techwear-inspired outfit with dayglow colors.
Last – and in this case, least – is the Sizzle Armor Costume. This impressive “swimsuit” of armor provides a significant boost to Shantae’s Fireball Magic. This design is inspired by 1980s anime bikini armor, with fluorescent reds, dragonslayer-esque plating, and gleaming gemstones and baubles. Shantae’s ponytail even changes into a fire-whip.
So there you have it – all the details on the all-new Deluxe Edition content for Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution. Both the Standard Edition and the Deluxe Edition will be available to purchase and download on August 19 – less than a month away. After waiting 20 years to get this game into your hands, I can hardly believe it’s finally about to happen. I hope you all are as excited to play the game as we are. Thank you for supporting this series.
Title: Hell is Us: New trailer and emotional insight from the creative director

Rogue Factor’s mysterious and brutal action adventure, Hell is Us, is clawing its way out of our darkest dreams and onto PlayStation 5 September 4. With an atmospheric new trailer fresh from the depths, the game’s Creative and Art Director, Jonathan Jacques-Belletête took me through its secrets to reveal more about the game’s enemies, dungeons, and emotional commentary.
What was the inspiration behind the Hollow Walker enemy designs and the strange blue Haze (around 1 minute in)?
There’s no singular inspiration. I look more to creating themes that we want to explore. So we wanted the enemies to be a physical manifestation of human emotions, and I then started thinking about how those emotions behave. Hazes are expressions of the emotions, using Robert Plutchik’s emotion wheel as inspiration for their colours, and the Hollow Walkers are white and emotionless, acting as a sort of facsimile of a human being that is emotion’s anchor.
We could have just made regular monsters that were expressions of emotion, like a rage monster, but I thought it would have been a little cliché. What if it was more cosmic horror, something unexplainable?
How many types of Hollow Walkers can we expect in the game?
There are five types – the Primeval, the Feral, the Protector, the Artillery and the Negator – each having three tiers, so a total of 15 variants. And then there are the Hazes, which are four emotions – grief, ecstasy, rage and terror – each with three tiers as well, which makes 12. So that gives us 27 enemies in the game.
Which ones are you most fond of?
So the Primeval, which is kind of the more basic and humanoid one, is the most iconic. I quite like it because it looked really cool in the early concept art.
The Feral is cool too, because I’m always going to remember the motion capture sessions. They walk on these pointy, weird arms, so we hired dancers for them who literally had stilts on their hands for the mocap, which was really interesting.
The Negator also has these weird ears that are actually his legs, and the way that he attacks with them is quite clever, but yeah, I think the Primeval is our little baby Hollow Walker, so that’s my favourite.
Can you tell us a bit more about the Hollow Walker with multiple Hazes we see at the end of the trailer?
It’s definitely one of the most memorable moments of that specific dungeon. The game isn’t really about typical bosses as such, but more about meaningful fights at key moments in the story. When multiple Hollow Walkers are connected to one Haze, we call it a Herder, but what we have at the end of the trailer is a Fervent, where a Hollow Walker – a Protector in this case – is attached to multiple Hazes.
What you see at the end of the trailer is the end of Act One. That Act is very much about grief, so you’re going through all the stages of grief, with each Haze having a name based on those stages. The combat loop is that these Hazes split out after you kill one, a bit like enemy slimes from RPGs, and the final one goes inside the Protector, which you then have to kill.
In the trailer we also see a dungeon which incorporates water wheels, while one is more like a mountain mine. Can you expand on the ideas behind these specific dungeons?
Each dungeon has a theme, and they’re related to a specific emotion as well. That’s also tied to the story of why this particular place exists. What was very important for me at the beginning of the project was having dungeons which weren’t contemporary even though the game takes place in a contemporary setting. I wanted them to be these impressive, fantasy things that feel out of this world. And we wanted to have fun with the types of puzzles that we couldn’t have had in a realistic, contemporary dungeon, like an abandoned factory or metro station.
Some of the dungeons have a lot more puzzles than others, some are more about combat, and some have a lot of environmental changes, like the one in the trailer where you have to play with the water levels and things like that. So they’re all different and tied to lore, which you sometimes need to understand in order to solve a puzzle. One of our themes is ‘history always repeats itself’, and even though you figure out these artefacts from ages ago, you realize that it relates to what’s going on right now. There’s lots to discover and play around with.
What other details would you encourage players to take a closer look at in the trailer?
So at around the 1.45 mark there’s a huge pile of something which you should maybe pay attention to. See what’s there. And then imagine how many things this represents. Because you could just think it’s a rocky hill in the middle of the dungeon, but if you pay attention to what it actually is, you start to ask questions. How did this happen? How did they create this? What was the machinery around this? It could be quite horrific, but interesting. There’s symbolism everywhere.
Hell is Us launches on September 4.

Title: How sound can save or doom you in I Hate This Place
Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2025 16:01:04 +0000
Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2025/07/29/how-sound-can-save-or-doom-you-in-i-hate-this-place/
Hi there, I’m Miki Majka, Game Producer at Rock Square Thunder. Today, I want to give you a first look at the official gameplay trailer for our upcoming game, I Hate This Place, which is coming to PlayStation 5 later this year. It’s a craft-based, isometric survival horror experience all wrapped in bold comic-style visuals and soaked in a gritty 1980s horror atmosphere.
I also want to take you a little deeper into how we’re using sound as more than just atmosphere. In I Hate This Place, silence isn’t simply golden — it can mean the difference between life and death.
But first, let’s take a look at the gameplay trailer:
Play Video
These creatures hunt by sound
As you probably noticed in the video, the world of I Hate This Place is filled with a lot of nightmarish, otherworldly creatures from a rather eerie and distorted world. But what might not be so clear is that many of these hulking monstrosities can barely see. Instead, they stalk their prey (you) by sound, so all your actions and movements need to be thought out. Every footstep, every gunshot, every clang of metal can give off your location.
So whether you’re creeping through overgrown woods or navigating decrepit facilities, the surface beneath your sneakers matters. A slow, crouched shuffle across grass will likely be ignored. A careless stomp on broken glass, not so much.

Making visual noise
To take this system further and make it more clever to players, we also made sound into a visual language, where noise is color-coded. It’s a unique visual system inspired to tie in with the game’s comic book art style. For example:
Green footsteps mean you’re quiet, crouched, moving slowly, minimizing riskYellow signals you’re walking at a normal pace and making moderate noiseRed means you’re running or being loud, and you’re a beacon for danger
This color-coded feedback system doesn’t just apply to footsteps, though. Gunfire, thrown objects, even the howls and attacks of enemies all follow the same noise-visibility rules, helping you judge just how much noise all of your actions are creating.
Sound as a weapon
Just as sound can get you killed, it can also be used to your advantage and become your most useful weapon. With a bit of strategy and planning, you can lure monsters away from key areas or into your cleverly laid traps. Tossing an empty can down a hallway or into the underbrush might attract a nearby creature, giving you the opening you need to escape. With a bit more planning and thought, you can try to herd enemies together into the perfect spot to then toss that grenade or molatov cocktail you happened to scrounge.
Stealth is your friend
Combat in I Hate This Place is about choosing your battles wisely. Many of the creatures you’ll encounter are brutal, and even more so when night falls. Going in guns blazing is doable, but maybe not always the right move. Ammo is scarce, noise is dangerous, and enemies are unforgiving.
Verify your age to view this content.

So the next time you feel tempted to sprint across an open field or you think firing off a shotgun blast in a tight corridor is a good idea, think twice. In I Hate This Place, it is not just what you do, it is how loud you are when you do it. Instead, you can rely on stealth, movement, and manipulation. Using the terrain, sound cues, and enemy behavior against them becomes second nature as you learn to navigate the environment and survive it.

That’s it for today’s deep dive about our combat and potentially sound-induced paranoia!

Very long-in-the-works Elder Scrolls modding project Skywind has hit another milestone in its winding road towards an eventual release. If you're the sort of person who likes to take in plenty of trailers when you're hunting for new stuff to play on Steam, Valve have just put out an update that should make doing so a bit more pleasant.
