Title: GTA 6 Should “Blaze A Trail” To More Expensive Games, Dev Says Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 17:17:15 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-should-blaze-a-trail-to-more-expensive-games-dev-says/ Rockstar's GTA 6 is priced at $80 for its standard edition. Another voice has come forward to say they hope other teams follow suit and charge more for new games to help the industry at a time when developers are closing up shop, cancelling games, and laying off developers on a regular basis. Martin Klima, the co-founder of Kingdom Come developer Warhorse, told PC Gamer that raising unit prices would "help a lot," but "everybody's scared to death" to do it. "Now, hopefully, GTA will blaze the trail, and it will allow us to increase the cost," he said, adding that Rockstar and Take-Two are among the only companies who can "afford, or who can dare" to raise prices in this way. He added that price increases for new games are "long overdue and also necessary for this business to survive." GTA 6 should kick off a trend of games costing more, Warhorse co-founder says. Take-Two was among the first big publishers to drive prices up from $60 to $70, kicking this off with NBA 2K21 in 2020. Numerous other publishers followed suit, and now $70 is the norm. Defending the price increase, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said production costs increased by 300%. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden said in 2025 that the price of new games should have gone up with every new console generation for the past 20 years. That largely did not happen, and now the industry is worse off for it, he said. “I think it’s because everyone’s afraid,” he told GI.biz. “No one wants to be the first one to raise the price, because you’re afraid to lose traffic. So what you do is you just end up eating into your operating income, your profit margin.” “There were more sports cars in the parking lot in the PS1 era than there were in the PS4 era, because if you’re selling 20 million units at $60 for something that only cost you $10 million to make, that’s different than selling 20 million units at $60 for something that cost you $160 million to make.” To help make up the difference, developers have hawked things like microtransactions, DLC, and battle passes. If more games go up in price, those trends will likely continue, too. Before GTA 6's price was revealed, a Bank of America stock analyst said Take-Two should charge $80 to help spur other publishers to follow suit. We already have $80 games, as Nintendo charges $80 for Mario Kart World, saying the game's ambition justifies the price tag. Every game is priced differently, even within the same publisher, as Take-Two launched Mafia: The Old Country for $50–to great success. For its part, Nintendo's newly released Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave costs $80 for its physical edition or $70 for its digital counterpart. GTA 6, which releases on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, also has a $100 Ultimate Edition and a $400 collector's edition that does not include the game. Zelnick said earlier this year that Rockstar could have leveraged the monumental demand for GTA 6 to charge a higher price to consumers, but chose not to. In addition to the mountains of money Rockstar and Take-Two are due to make off GTA 6 game sales, the game is likely to eventually have some kind of new version of GTA Online, and that's no doubt going to print money.
Title: GTA 6 Takes The Ridiculous World We Live In And Turns It Up To 11 Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 17:14:39 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-takes-the-ridiculous-world-we-live-in-and-turns-it-up-to-11/ Video games are usually a few steps removed from reality, but with Grand Theft Auto 6, developer Rockstar Games aims to reflect and amplify the current state of the world with an "over the top" experience. As seen in the trailers and gameplay previews so far, GTA 6 is a contemporary game about doing whatever it takes to make it to the top, and that pursuit of fame and glory is often bookended by shootouts, car chases, and explosions in its Bonnie and Clyde narrative. "If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face," senior VP of narrative Rupert Humphries said to Love Magazine. "Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world." Humphries also described the world of GTA 6 as "a pressure cooker for all kinds of insanity," as the protagonists, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, are polar opposites. Game writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern described Lucina as an ambitious go-getter who'll do anything to get the life she dreams of, while Jason is bound by life's circumstances. "We wanted both protagonists to be vulnerable, tough, flawed, right sometimes, wrong sometimes, able to learn from each other," Gauvey-Kern said. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vlzIPpyJR0 GTA 6 is also making some big changes to the franchise formula, as getting out of trouble won't be as easy as hiding in an alley and waiting for your wanted level to drop. Actions have consequences, and with the cops being much smarter and more persistent, players will have to be more cunning before they embark on a crime spree. The relationship between Jason and Lucia is also surprisingly more nuanced and deeper than you think, and it'll be a major part of the overall GTA 6 experience when the game launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. With the wait almost over, the marketing machine for GTA 6 has begun to get into gear. Advertising has already taken over a Miami stadium, and the NBA's Miami Heat have announced they'll wear GTA 6-inspired jerseys when they face off against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 18. Rockstar Games also announced a $400 GTA 6 Collector's Edition last week; while it doesn't include the game, it does include various trinkets typically associated with users of the devil's dandruff. Title: Xbox Game Pass Loses These 9 Games In October Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 16:34:36 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-game-pass-loses-these-9-games-in-october/ The start of the month usually brings several new Xbox Game Pass titles for subscribers, along with confirmation of which games will leave the subscription service in the coming days. This month, at least nine games will be leaving, including one of the best games of 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Other big departures this month include A Plague Tale: Requiem and-- inconveniently for horror fans during the spookiest month of the year--the Dead by Daylight spin-off The Casting of Frank Stone. Evil West is another great game you only have a few days left to play, with a solid 7/10 experience full of monster-slaying energy. Pacific Drive was another one of our favorites when it was released a few years back, as this eerie roguelite driving game combined a tense atmosphere with themes of mystery and survival. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Leaving Xbox Game Pass on October 15 The Casting of Frank Stone Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Crime Scene Cleaner Donut County Evil West Superball Nova Roma (Game Preview) Pacific Drive A Plague Tale Requiem As a reminder, you can save 20% on these games if you decide to buy them before they leave Game Pass. September was a pretty big month for Game Pass removals, with a total of 18 games packing their bags. The list included some big titles, like The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Sifu, and Frostpunk 2.
Title: The Best Games Of 2026 (So Far) Date: Fri, 08 May 2026 16:28:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/the-best-games-of-2026/2900-7436/ Once again, the year in gaming has seen no shortage of high-quality releases and GOTY contenders. Looking ahead, there are many highly anticipated games coming out in 2026, but how well will they score when they arrive? That remains to be seen, but, as in previous years, we'll keep track of all the games that hit a review score of at least 8 and list them below. That doesn't mean that games that fall below that threshold aren't worth your time, as they can still entertain you for hours on end if you can overlook some of their flaws. We'll also be keeping track of those titles below, but for now, the focus here is on must-play games. 2025's best games included Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Silent Hill F, alongside entries from smaller studios like The Seance of Blake Manor, Dispatch, and Blue Prince. As a reminder, GameSpot does standard game reviews, reviews in progress, and we'll sometimes publish updated reviews of ongoing games if there have been major changes to them. Most of our reviews are also adapted for video, so if you'd like to hear the soothing voices of our producers tell you exactly why a game is worth your time, you can hit up our YouTube page. To keep things simple, we'll be listing the games below alphabetically, based on their scores. We've also added a new section below, because while we may not find time to review every game out this year, there's still plenty that we'd recommend when it comes to gripping entertainment that we jammed during our personal time. Big Walk -- 9 Big Walk is a delightful and refreshing jaunt across a digital frontier that reminds you why video games are at their best when friends are involved. Untitled Goose Game developer House House has put together a charming combo of walking sim, puzzle-solving, and friendslop, and it leaves you to your own devices when you first set foot into a wilderness inspired by the legendary Australian outback. That hands-off approach, clever co-op communication channels, and simple gameplay make for a game that nails the idea of exploration and experimentation. Read our Big Walk review. Available for PC, Switch 2, and PS5. Advertisement Cairn -- 9 Cairn represents a new peak for mountain-climbing games, as it fuses a vivid sense of wonder with a feeling of true peril. It's you against the world as you guide the protagonist Aava up steep cliffs and search for that one handhold that won't spell certain doom when you shift your weight. With equilibrium being a key component of the experience, Cairn also knows exactly when to let players breathe, offering moments of quiet reflection as a counterbalance to when you hit a metaphorical--and literal--wall on your ascent. See on Fanatical Featured in this image Cairn View Game Hub Follow Advertisement Control Resonant -- 9 No one will dispute that Remedy Entertainment is a master of storytelling, but with Control Resonant, the studio also proves that it knows how to marry a weird-as-hell narrative with gripping action. The developer has never been afraid to throw experimental ideas at its audience, but this time, Remedy has gone mainstream with how you'll play the game. It's an approach that has resulted in arguably the best pure gameplay experience since Max Payne, and when combined with incredible art direction and a surprisingly tender story, it makes for a potent blend. Read our Control Resonant review. Available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo's latest entry in its turn-based tactical RPG series lures you in with an incredible campaign and colorful characters, while missions operate as combat puzzles that require you to use every resource at your disposal to triumph. It's not just a return to form for Fire Emblem following the release of the underwhelming Fire Emblem: Engage in 2023, but a new gold standard for the franchise. Read our Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave review. Available for Switch 2. Advertisement Marathon -- 9 Marathon is admittedly a lot to take in the first time you boot it up, but stick with it, and you'll find an extraction shooter that captures the highs and lows of the genre. Its art direction is a visual feast, the gunplay packs a punch, and there's a surprising amount of depth in each 20-minute excursion to Tau Ceti IV. How Marathon will shape up over the long term remains to be seen, but Bungie has delivered an exciting game with strong fundamentals, rich lore, and tactical gameplay that could get even better in time with post-launch DLC drops. Read our Marathon review. Available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Rhythm Heaven Groove continues that tradition for surprisingly goofy games, and similar to WarioWare, offering a collection of zany microgames, there's plenty to dig into here. The big difference is the emphasis on music and timing in Rhythm Heaven Groove, but once you find your groove, you're in for a heck of an experience. It looks and sounds great, Remix Sections are downright magical, and the game is unapologetically weird. Read our Rhythm Heaven Groove review. Available for Switch and Switch 2. The Steam Autumn Sale runs October 1-7, and as you'd expect in a month with tempting pumpkin-spice lattes, this is a dangerous time for your wallet. We're expecting the usual selection of discounts across games, bundle deals, and a chance to stock up on cheap downloadable content, plus a few hidden gems to help grow our backlogs. As a reminder, the Steam Summer Sale will be followed by several more events throughout the rest of 2026. This month, you can look forward to Cooking Fest (October 12-19), Next Fest (October 19-26), and Steam Scream V Fest (October 26 - November 2). November has a single event with Auto-Battler RPG Fest, and the Steam Winter Sale will land in December. After the 2026 season is done, you'll have to wait until March 2027 for the Steam Spring Sale. You can check out the list of upcoming events and dates through our Steam sales hub. Rez Infinite  Sale price: $7.49 (normally $25) One of the few games I've consistently played for years and will likely play as long as I live, Rez Infinite is a euphoric experience with an all-time great soundtrack and fun on-rails shooter gameplay that can be as chill or intense as you want. -- Chris Pereira See on Steam Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Sale price: $56 ($51 on Fanatical for a Steam key; normally $70) Hideo Kojima's post-apocalyptic courier game is a gorgeous trek across an Australian wasteland and undoubtedly one of the weirdest entries in his eclectic catalogue. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Fanatical Tactical Breach Wizards Sale price: $11 (normally $20) Drop the roguelite nature of Into the Breach and substitute a compelling story, hilarious dialogue, and the ability to routinely launch enemies out of windows to their doom, and you've got Tactical Breach Wizards. -- Chris Pereira See on Steam Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Sale price: $49 ($43.39 for a Steam key at Fanatical; normally $70) Easily the best Batman game in over 10 years, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a goofy Caped Crusader adventure that's also a sincere tribute to the legendary Gotham vigilante. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Fanatical Far Cry 6 Sale price: $6 (normally $60) It's not the best Far Cry game ever made, but Far Cry 6 at a 90% discount is a pretty great deal for open-world shooting, exploration, and trying to survive being in the crosshairs of a dictator played by Giancarlo Esposito. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Street Fighter 6 Sale price: $16 (normally $40) With a feature-film adaptation out next month, now is a great time to check out the best fighting game of the current PC and console generation, Street Fighter 6. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Meccha Chameleon Sale price: $4.19 (normally $6) One of the best friendslop experiences of 2026, Meccha Chameleon is the ultimate multiplayer hide-and-seek game and an absolute steal at its current price. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Iron Nest: Heavy Turret Simulator Sale price: $15 (was $20) Believe it or not, a brutal dieselpunk heavy-artillery game where you have to pull every lever and twist every dial to fire off devastating cannons is surprisingly fun! -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Tempest Rising Sale price: $20 (was $40) Command & Conquer's current hiatus from PC gaming remains excruciating, but for fans looking for a nostalgic reminder of the real-time strategy glory days, Tempest Rising is a fine substitute. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Watch Dogs 2 Sale price: $2.49 (was $50) The first Watch Dogs was, mechanically, a very cool twist on the GTA formula with its grid-hacking gameplay and stealth. The story, however, was insultingly bad, and protagonist Aiden Pearce was barely even a character. Watch Dogs 2 fixes everything that made the first one disappointing, with a cast of relatable and entertaining characters, including new protagonist Marcus.  -- Gabe Gurwin See on Steam Gunpoint Sale price: $2.49 (normally $10) Thanks to its blend of on-point humor and extremely clever gameplay (revolving around stealthily hacking areas of a building to accomplish your goals), Gunpoint is without question the game I most often recommend for someone looking for a cheap game on Steam. -- Chris Pereira See on Steam The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy Sale price: $49 (normally $70) My clear Game of the Year for 2025, The Hundred Line is a blend of visual novels and tactics gameplay, melded with a truly audacious concept for the overall structure of the game that will keep you playing for a long time. -- Chris Pereira See on Steam Absolum Sale price: $19 (normally $25) Absolum is a stellar beat-'em-up that fuses the classic arcade genre with roguelike progression in an eerie original fantasy setting. -- Steve Watts See on Steam Big Hops Sale price: $13 (normally $20) This cute platformer about an adventurous frog has surprisingly great traversal mechanics, and now it's added eight-player co-op so you can hop together.  -- Steve Watts See on Steam Blade Chimera Sale price: $12 (normally $15) A masterful metroidvania from one of the best developers in the genre, Blade Chimera takes the strong exploration foundation of classics like Symphony of the Night and infuses them with a sci-fi future.  -- Steve Watts See on Steam Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles Sale price: $30 (normally $50) Highly regarded as a fantastic Final Fantasy game and tactics game alike, The Ivalice Chronicles made this classic shine with new quality-of-life features and a retouched translation. -- Steve Watts See on Steam Level Devil Sale price: $5 (normally $7) This game is best described as a series of pranks, perpetrated on you, the player, as it constantly subverts your expectations in hilarious ways. -- Steve Watts See on Steam Blue Prince Sale price: $18 ($15.29 for a Steam key at Fanatical; normally $30) This roguelike puzzle game has you unlocking the mysteries of a shapeshifting mansion as you slowly find your way to the mysterious room 46, and beyond. -- Steve Watts See on Fanatical Solasta: Crown of the Magister Sale price: $3 (normally $30) A great alternative to Baldur's Gate 3 (especially if you've already put hundreds of hours into it), Solasta is a faithful translation of Dungeons & Dragons 5E to video games, complete with a deep combat system, a well-written (if basic) story, and the customization options you expect from D&D. -- Gabe Gurwin See on Steam Mad Max Sale price: $3 ($2.39 for a Steam key at Fanatical; normally $20) Built in the vein of Batman Arkham and Shadow of Mordor, Mad Max is the underappreciated third tip of WB Games' licensed trident from yesteryear, with exhilarating car combat gameplay set in a dieselpunk world that still looks fantastic today. -- Mark Delaney See on Fanatical Retro Rewind Sale price: $14 (normally $20) There are so many job sims out there right now, but if you're like me, none of them will hit the same as Retro Rewind, in which you operate a video rental store in the 1990s. Get in on it soon and you'll be well-acquainted before video game rentals are added to the game this fall. -- Mark Delaney See on Steam Observation Sale price: $6 (normally $25) Before the team put out Silent Hill: Downfall, Screen Burn created Observation (not to be confused with Bloober Team's Observer), a slow-burn sci-fi thriller in which players control an on-board AI, assisting the lone human investigating the disappearance of her fellow astronauts. -- Mark Delaney See on Steam Costume Quest Sale price: $2 (normally $10) Perhaps the most Halloween game ever made--even in a world where we now have a game called Halloween--Costume Quest is Double Fine's easy-to-love, vibes-rich, and kid-friendly game about a group of friends going trick-or-treating and clashing with candy-obsessed monsters. -- Mark Delaney See on Steam Ori and the Will of the Wisps Sale price: $3 (normally $30) Not just one of the best metroidvanias ever made, Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an emotionally-charged adventure that looks as good as it plays. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Death's Door Sale price: $2 (normally $20) Death's Door is more than just a beautifully designed action game in which you play as an avian grim reaper, as this stunning soulslike experience is also an honest examination of life and death. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam The Division 2 Sale price: $3 (normally $30) One of the best cover-based shooters of all time, The Division 2 combines strong gameplay with cool covert ops design and it has been regularly updated with new content in the years since it was first released. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Sale price: $15 (normally $50) An absurd amount of bang for your buck at this price, the middle chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is an open-world adventure that is truly massive and full of terrific characters to join you on the unknown journey. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate Sale price: $7.49 (normally $30) Sure, Splintered Fate is heavily inspired by Hades, but it also puts a radical spin on the formula while giving you a colorful cast of New York mutants to play as you perfect your butt-kicking skills against Shredder and his Foot Clan. -- Darryn Bonthuys See on Steam Disclosure: Fanatical and GameSpot are both owned by Fandom.

Title: Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition – Erika Ishii interview Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 13:00:05 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/02/ghost-of-yotei-complete-edition-erika-ishii-interview/ Atsu’s hunt is not over. A year after the original game launched, PS5 players can dive into the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition. Available now on PS5, this brings together the story campaign, the Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer mode, and two new major additions: the roguelike mode Most Wanted, and the narrative expansion Echoes of Sekigahara. The story is split between the present day and flashbacks to Atsu’s time on the mainland. To mark the Complete Edition’s launch, and celebrate the game’s first anniversary, we welcome back the voice of Atsu, Erika Ishii, to talk about the game. Note: The below interview is condensed for clarity and brevity. You can listen to the full chat on the latest episode of the PlayStation Podcast, available later today. Play Video PlayStation Blog: It’s been a year since the game originally launched. What has Atsu brought to your life since? Erika Ishii: I still can’t get over it, you know, because again, this was my dream. I played The Last of Us and I said, I want to do that. I already knew I wanted to act. I already knew I loved video games. But I said specifically – that. That is what I want to do. And… yeah, being on my PlayStation home screen, playing the game, getting to travel to Tokyo Game Show, which was another dream of mine. And to have a beautiful professional cosplay made for me of Atsu so I could be Atsu on the Sony PlayStation stage in Japan… it really does feel like a fever dream sometime. I was curious to know whether your dialogue for the expansion was recorded after the fact or part of the bundle together with the original recording. Sounds like you came back. So what’s the time gap there between that last piece of dialogue you recorded for the main story campaign and then coming back to the expansion? There were at least a couple of months between. They had to work really hard on polish to get the game out, then take a very well-deserved little bit of a break. But as we were nearing the end of production, I was inquiring constantly. “Are we doing DLC? Because Iki Island was really great and really fleshed out some stuff that I wanted to know about in Atsu’s backstory…” And I did have a list of pitches for them [laughs] They didn’t go with anything that I suggested. But even at the launch party I was talking with Courtney Woods, the writer for Echoes of Sekigahara. And we were scheming. We thought “Atsu needs a little romance in her life”. Like, there’s no way she didn’t have any romance. She mentioned [as such] in one of the onsen scenes. So you know she’d had bedtime bed companions at least. But what’s the deal with personal attachments? Is this the only time in her life up until now she’s had them? And so I got my wish. You had that little bit of time away. Did that time increase your awareness of the character, or anything you experienced outside the role that helped inform your performance of Atsu further? Pretty much playing the game. It’s wild because, you know, most of the time voice actors don’t get to play the game until after it comes out. I was fortunate enough [to do so] during production. But playing through the finished game and literally being hands-on and in her shoes. Because a lot of times, if it’s been a while since you’ve played a character, they’ll play you reference audio. But I could go directly to being Atsu, go right into the booth. It was such a gift. There are flashbacks. So it’s two periods of Atsu’s life. So how do you get into that headspace where you’re having to switch? A couple of things helped. We had done a lot of flashbacks with young Atsu. And so extrapolating what happened. Most of the time in acting you have what is called a prior moment. Before any scene starts you have to know where you were. You have to have a whole lived life experience prior to this moment. I already had to have it in my head and sort of know what she had been through and what this huge informative point in her life felt like. For an actor, you have to have [to be able to] drop in at any moment and be like, okay, well, I think that her time doing this probably informed how it’s going to be in the quote-unquote present day. Play Video This roguelike mode, Most Wanted. Did you record new dialogue for that? Yes, there is some new dialogue for that. Because it is a new mode and non-canonical, it has a slightly different feeling to it, more mystical, in the way that the multiplayer is more mythological. There’s a heightened quality to it. You’re not the only character in Most Wanted. There’s some familiar faces, but a surprise face is… Jin, who is returning, and I believe Daisaku Tsuji recorded new voice lines for this as well. I understand you didn’t crossover during the recording sessions but you folks must have got together to talk all things Ghost and just compare experiences? I got to chat with him [when he was in Los Angeles] and we chatted a little bit about it. And that was actually before the game had launched. I told him how much his work meant to me and how I’m grateful to be accepting the Ghost torch. In a lot of ways he was new to video games with Ghost of Tsushima. But since then he’s appeared in many other games. I think almost all of which I am also in. We joke that we’re bound together forever, and one of us will follow in the other’s footsteps. Last year I asked you where launch day would find you. You mentioned it was a gathering of folk from the game. So where does the first anniversary of Yotei find you? Oh, my gosh. I think the big thing is that the Complete Edition is out. I didn’t know the launch date until the rest of the world did. We all had a little betting pool as to when we thought this was going to drop. And I said, I guarantee it’ll be on the anniversary. I was one day off [laughs]. I feel like this is the one year celebration. It’s very bittersweet to me. It’s been four years of my life being her face, her movements and her voice, and helping to develop her and working with just like some of the greatest team of all time is…  Atsu is going to be a part of my heart forever. And, you know, when they have the PlayStation logos, they’re going to have a picture of Atsu, a picture of my face there. I still see cosplays at conventions. I… This is, again, to bring it back around to the beginning, this was my dream. And I think that what do you do when you accomplish the big thing when you get to the top of the mountain is you just got to keep going there. There are more mountains to climb, I think. I have the great privilege of, in addition to Atsu, having other characters or work that are a part of my oeuvre. I don’t have to be defined by Atsu, but she is… gonna always be so special to me.
Title: AI upscaling is coming to PS5 Date: Thu, 01 Oct 2026 16:00:09 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/ai-upscaling-is-coming-to-ps5/ Since the launch of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PS5 Pro, players and developers have asked whether similar image-quality improvements could be brought to the PS5 console. PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible. Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations: A streamlined neural network architecture A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5 With these, we are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5. The first titles to use this innovative new library are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.  Here’s what Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions have to share about the benefits of this new technology: Play Video “Our team at Insomniac works hard to make sure each of our games is a showcase of PlayStation hardware, and we’re excited for Marvel’s Wolverine to be one of the first titles to bring this new QSSR technology to players. QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey. It’s a perfect companion to the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and it brings a great taste of the PS5 Pro experience to our players on PS5. Personally, I love seeing how the PlayStation tech teams continually improve the PS5 platform, and I’m excited for more games to make use of QSSR in the future!” – Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology / Insomniac Games Play Video “At Sucker Punch, we’re excited to bring QSSR to Ghost of Yōtei players so that they can experience the world we’ve created with even more clarity and detail. QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now. We’ve long wished that all PS5 players could experience the incredible image quality that PSSR brings to PS5 Pro, and QSSR is a positive step towards that goal!” – Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer / Sucker Punch Productions QSSR will be offered broadly to all PlayStation developers, and we look forward to seeing these improvements in many more titles going forward!
Title: Martial arts meet fluid platforming in Elta: Defy All Gods, with a free PS5 demo out today Date: Thu, 01 Oct 2026 15:00:44 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/martial-arts-meet-fluid-platforming-in-elta-defy-all-gods-with-a-free-ps5-demo-out-today/ Take the punchy, fast-paced combat of a brawler, the tight platforming and exploration of a search-action game, and a cute dragon companion (who’s also the millennia-old god you worship), and blend everything together with a dash of anime flair. That is the recipe for Elta: Defy All Gods, our upcoming game here at Afterburner Studios, launching February 2nd, 2027. Dive in with us as we explain how our action-platformer brings back the best from the classics while making it a fresh experience, what inspired us, and why you should jump into the free demo on PlayStation 5 today. Play Video A new take on action-platformers Action-platformers have had a resurgence of interest in the last few years, providing an interesting mix of combat, exploration, and story, but few have tried blending explosive hand-to-hand fights with labyrinthian, non-linear exploration. Elta: Defy All Gods provides just that: impactful melee action, mixing martial arts and magic, broken up by flowing aerial platforming and discovery across three winding sci-fi worlds. The challenge lies in mastering both combat and navigation; juggling enemies in dynamic encounters across sprawling worlds that won’t always hold your hand. The best way to explain our unique take on the genre is to coin a new term. We like to call Elta: Defy All Gods a “brawlervania”. Brawler enthusiasts will enjoy three martial art stances, each with their own skill trees, alongside magic systems to unleash built-up energy in massive attacks. Platforming players, on the other hand, will get a growing set of movement abilities with classic moves, such as the double jump, dash, wall run, and grapple. That’s not all though; Elta, your dragon, will be key, by giving you new unique abilities to hit harder and reach previously inaccessible locations. The inspirations behind Elta: Defy All Gods Veteran players will definitely catch nods to series we grew up with, like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, God of War, Darksiders, and Jak and Daxter. We take a lot of pride in honoring these classics, but we wanted to do more than just rehash them. To carve out our own identity within that familiar formula, we traded traditional weapon-based hacking and slashing for fluid, hand-to-hand martial arts. By weaving your dragon companion’s abilities right into your fights and platforming acrobatics, we hope to bring something fresh to the table. To find that specific energy, we also sought creative inspiration outside of the gaming realm entirely. Moving to TV screens, shōnen anime, and especially Dragon Ball Z, have been a massive inspiration for us, echoing the power fantasy you can experience playing the warrior monk Victus. With such a heavy focus on melee combat, we also turned to Hong Kong martial arts movies, ranging from the Ip Man saga to Shaw Brothers’ classics. These influences have been wrapped in a painterly art direction that makes each vista look like living concept art. The sense of power you get while playing echoes the sense of scale you feel when taking in each landscape. Reaching high ambitions as an indie team Despite the big-budget games listed above, we are not a large studio by any means. With three co-founders and a dozen core members, delivering on this game’s promise has been a real challenge for us at Afterburner Studios. It’s one that required us to lean heavily on our background in indie development. We’ve taken lessons from our previous game into Elta, finding clever ways to achieve bigger things with our small-sized team. While we’ve stayed true to our vision of a modernized take on classic mechanics, Elta has gone through constant iteration over the course of the last five years to allow us to deliver the best versions of this game to players – both in world, gameplay and tone. This was also made possible through a partnership with Focus Entertainment, the folks behind Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy. By lending us their design, production, and QA experience, they allowed us to expand our vision and tackle a dream project – one that would only be possible with their support. Instead of getting slowed down by our ambitions, this fruitful partnership allowed us to double down on what we do best: crafting satisfying game feel. Game feel as our main priority At every stage of development, we’ve gotten the same feedback: this is a game that must be felt, controller in hand, rather than just watched. All our mechanics, in both combat and platforming, have been tuned to be as satisfying as possible. By using the haptics of the DualSense controller, landing punches and hitting platforms has a real tactile weight, resulting in a more immersive experience for PlayStation players. Ultimately, we want to create an action-packed adventure that puts fun first and continues to defy your expectations for what a small indie team can pull off. And you don’t need to wait to try it out for yourself: our free demo is available today on PS5, allowing you to experience the very beginning of Elta: Defy All Gods. Retrieve the lost dragon-god you worship, brawl corrupted enemies in intense melee combat, and explore Lerna, a glacial world filled with hidden secrets, ancient ruins, and industrial remnants. The full game releases on February 2, 2027, and if you pre-order, you can get the Vanguard Armor, a special cosmetic skin for Victus. Find Elta, face off against the gods and start the journey to bring salvation to your people with the free demo, available today on PlayStation 5.
Title: Return to Fabletown with The Wolf Among Us Remastered, out October 29 Date: Thu, 01 Oct 2026 13:00:49 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/return-to-fabletown-with-the-wolf-among-us-remastered-out-october-29/ Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us Remastered launches October 29. To get ready for Bigby Wolf’s enhanced tale we sat down with Telltale’s Matt Saia, the game director of The Wolf Among Us Remastered, and VP of Creative at Telltale, to talk about returning to Fabletown. The Wolf Among Us is one of Telltale’s most beloved series. Do you remember the first time you played it? What resonated most and stayed with you since?  Matt Saia: I came to it as a fan of Telltale having played The Walking Dead and Back to the Future. Wolf had a killer look and a werewolf in it, that was enough to get me in the door. From the first scene, the story, the contrast of these fables characters in the 1980s, and the neon noir style had me hooked. Their stories touched human emotions and stuck with me forever. What was the goal with remastering The Wolf Among Us?  We wanted to honor the Telltale legacy. This is a classic title, and it needed a respectful update. We avoided touching the story, the directorial choices, and the overall art style, those are sacred to us. The goal is to introduce new players to Wolf in the best way possible and create a fun experience for returning players by packing it with updated art and behind the scenes features. Ultimately, it was a love letter to fans. We’re all fans and we took time to make sure it is the best version of The Wolf Among Us that stays true to the original. Telltale added Noir Mode to The Wolf Among Us Remastered. What do you think this brings to the game?  Coincidentally, I was the person who added Shadows Mode to Telltale’s Batman series. We’ve treated it differently in Remastered. Unlike Batman, where we had highlights of color we’ve kept Wolf with a pure noir film vibe. The tone feels different when it’s black and white. I love the colors of the main game but, in Noir Mode, the shadows feel a little darker. Play Video Let’s talk about some of the technical improvements. How was it working with the original Telltale engine?  The old Telltale engine is quirky but cool. We started by moving it up to the latest engine used in the Batman series. Next, we created new shaders for things like shiny bottles, and inverted lines on moving objects like the ghost ship. The biggest challenge was lighting. It wasn’t something we intended to do but we realized anything we changed in any scene required that we redo the lighting. By the end, every scene in the game was relit. One of the biggest testaments to how good we got with the old engine is we built the entire Summer Games Fest trailer in engine. How about the Character art?  Our choice was to elevate the game that everybody loved. The remastered characters have amazing detail but when you look at Bigby, he looks like Bigby. I think that’s the balance beam you walk; we wanted people to say “That’s the Bigby I remember”, but if you go back and look at the original, the remastered one is unmistakably more refined.  Every single character went through concept to high-end model to final in-game model. All the textures and models are new and multiple times more detailed than the original game. If you did a simple up-rez, all you’re really doing is taking the curves and lines that are already there and making them smoother. Our process provoked more aggressive choices with how you treat the characters without losing who they are because you’re taking them from scratch. It was a big lift, but worth it. Is there anything from this remastering process that exceeded your expectations?   The werewolf. I think everybody wanted to change him in a big way, and we did. He is ferocious, so much more feral and powerful than the original but still true to The Wolf Among Us. Is there anything else you’d like people to know?   It was amazing to revisit Fabletown. The team was incredible. We love every dusty apartment and lit cigarette and, more importantly, the characters and story they tell. To me, that’s what makes a great remaster; when you know people poured their soul into it. We want existing fans to show up and know they are in good hands. For new fans, it’s an opportunity to be captivated by a fully-realized version of this amazing universe just as we all were. To everyone out there, thank you for sticking with Telltale and believing in us.   The Wolf Among Us Remastered launches October 29 and is available to wishlist now.

Title: Desktop and handheld prices going out of control means PC bargain hunts lead to my old enemy: gaming laptops Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 16:15:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/desktop-and-handheld-prices-going-out-of-control-means-pc-bargain-hunts-lead-to-my-old-enemy-gaming-laptops I don’t know if memory shortages have permanently killed off the concept of 'cheap' gaming PCs, but they have at least beat it into a coma. On the desktop side, inflated RAM, SSDs and graphics card prices continue to inflict karmic pain for our years of "It's cheaper to build it yourself" smugness, while formerly affordable handheld PCs are either suffering 40%-plus jackups or launching above £1K from the off. And the Steam Machine! The poor, square Steam Machine. Every few weeks, possibly in denial, I’ll skim through the shops to see what budget games kit actually looks like in this day and age. Across the last five or six rounds, little has changed: the entry point into decent, more-or-less current-spec 1080p play remains stuck in the low quadruple figures, particularly if you’re fully new to PC ownership and need to factor in a monitor and peripherals. There is one exception, assuming you don’t fancy your luck on the secondhand market, but giving it a hands-on appraisal means confronting an ancient hardware foe of mine. And you all know how little I like to have my prejudices challenged. Still, research suggests that yes, this truly is the most gaming PC you can get for under £999. So, um. Here it goes. May...maybe gaming laptops aren’t so bad. Read more

The aim is to ensure that the modders maintain more control over where and when the latest version of Grimhammer 3 can be grabbed, with creator Venris threatening to make the mod private if the situation doesn't improve. Title: AI-generated Fallout: New York browser game full of utterly cursed faces slapped with Bethesda cease and desist, its slop prompter claims Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 11:45:53 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ai-generated-fallout-new-york-browser-game-full-of-utterly-cursed-faces-slapped-with-bethesda-cease-and-desist-its-slop-prompter-claims In perhaps the least surprising Fallout news since Raul from New Vegas confirmed that ghouls with dodgy knees don't enjoy sneaking, the person behind an AI-generated browser game dubbed Fallout: New York has claimed to have recieved a cease and desist message from Bethesda parent company ZeniMax. Their creation, if such a term fits, was generated using Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 tech. Read more
Title: PUBG extraction shooter Black Budget canned less than a year from reveal, after Krafton decide it won't "deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term" Date: Fri, 02 Oct 2026 09:26:02 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/pubg-extraction-shooter-black-budget-canned-less-than-a-year-from-reveal-after-krafton-decide-it-wont-deliver-an-experience-players-could-enjoy-over-the-long-term PUBG: Black Budget, an extraction shooter spin-off of Krafton's battle royale, has been cancelled after just under a year of closed alpha testing. Krafton cited a lack of faith that Black Budget's "current direction" would lead to "an experience players could enjoy over the long term" as the reasoning behind their call to end development. Though, they insisted PUBG Studios have learned valuable lessons that'll serve future games. Read more
