Title: 14 Games That Give You The Absolute Best Bang For Your Buck Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 21:35:59 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/games-that-give-you-the-absolute-best-bang-for-your-buck/ Gaming has never been more expensive. We're here to investigate why, and help you play more while spending less. Welcome to GameSpot Cheap Week. Although games themselves are technically cheaper than ever before, it's no secret that our average disposable income has diminished significantly. As such, paying $70 (or more) each time a new game comes out is simply not feasible for the vast majority of us. Thankfully, there are a ton of fantastic games out there that don't require a second mortgage or Klarna account to start playing. We've rounded up 14 games that, we believe, give you the absolute best bang for your buck. Each one of these titles offers a robust experience--one that will keep you coming back for well over 50 hours and could very easily be the sole title you buy and play over several months. And while we do firmly believe that playtime does not equate to value, our focus here is on providing options for those who have little to spend and would like something that is both great and can occupy a lot of their time. Additionally, we tried to avoid all the usual free-to-play, live-service games that appear on lists like these. Chances are, you already know Overwatch, Fortnite, and the like are free, and we wanted to focus on games that you technically need to buy but are going to net you a lot of playtime. We also steer clear from games that have yet to drop below $30, hence why you won't see Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, or Fire Emblem: Three Houses on here, for example. Sure, these games are fantastic and feature a ton of content and replayability, but we wanted to ensure some threshold was set in place prior to curating this list. Now, whether you're looking for a sweeping RPG, a charming life sim, or a strategic roguelite, here are 14 games that prove you don't need to spend serious dough to have a seriously good time: Final Fantasy XIV Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14? Of course you have--and you've probably even stumbled upon that famous copypasta, too. Final Fantasy XIV's free trial is a frankly absurdly good deal, hence the reason its players can't stop evangelizing it, myself included. With no time restrictions and the inclusion of the game's first three expansions, including the critically acclaimed Shadowbringers, the sheer abundance of things to do in FFXIV makes it quite easily one of the greatest deals in gaming. And sure, MMOs aren't for everyone, but with FFXIV, it's free to find out if that's the case for you. -- Jessica Cogswell The Sims 4 Sure, it'll cost you around $1,200 to buy all of The Sims 4's numerous pieces of DLC, but you might be surprised to know that The Sims 4 itself is available for the low, low cost of… nothing! Following a decade's worth of free updates--and the creation of an extremely robust mod market--the base version of the game is actually pretty fun to play, offering a streamlined yet satisfying experience that proves why the game remains the de facto life sim after all these years. And, if you do play and find it a bit too sparse for your liking, rest assured that EA often runs a deal where you can bundle an expansion, a game pack, and a stuff pack at a reduced price and many overarching sales that offer massive discounts on just about all of the game's DLC. -- Jessica Cogswell The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition You've probably been told a million times that you should play The Witcher 3, but let's go ahead and make that a million and one, just for good measure: You should play The Witcher 3. More specifically, you should play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition, as it includes all of the game's existing DLC and regularly goes on sale for $10. On top of being one of precious few games that blends meaningful open-world design and masterful storytelling (to resounding success, I might add), it's also incredibly fun to play and offers well over 100 hours of gameplay--and that's without factoring in all the Gwent that awaits  you. Plus, it has Yennefer in it. Need I say more? -- Jessica Cogswell Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Now, speaking of characters from beloved RPG trilogies whom I desperately want to smooch, it's time to talk about Mass Effect. If you want to experience what is arguably one of the best epic sci-fi stories of all time, I urge you to pick up Mass Effect: Legendary Edition immediately. Actually, wait, doing so now kinda defeats the whole "extremely cheap" angle of this piece, so let me rephrase: I urge you to wait until it goes on sale for less than $10, which happens often, then pick it up, okay? But seriously, in combining all three Mass Effect games and their respective DLC, ME's Legendary Edition is a fantastic way to experience a series that is now heralded as a masterclass in worldbuilding and storytelling. With dozens of unforgettable characters, narrative-driven gameplay that is molded through player choice, and plenty of action (both on the field and in the bedroom), the Mass Effect trilogy is a space opera that no gamer should miss. -- Jessica Cogswell Vampire Survivors Sure, Vampire Survivors might not be a visual spectacle, but it doesn't have to be when playing it feels as phenomenal as it does. Beneath its simplistic UI and retro visuals, Vampire Survivors boasts one of the most compelling gameplay loops around. It's the type of game that begs players to do just one more run, and I, for one, am always happy to oblige. Though each adventure begins as a slow jaunt through an evil forest or haunted tower, these journeys grow increasingly more chaotic as time goes by. Before you know it, the center of your screen is all lasers, garlic barriers, and whirling bibles, while its edges spill forth a seemingly endless undead army. Vampire Survivors is one of the ultimate "number go up" games, and is always available for a "number go low" price. -- Jessica Cogswell Hades Few games make dying as fun as Hades, a game in which you play as the son of the titular god of the underworld, Zagreus, who is fed up of living under his temperamental father's thumb. Though progression through failure and an emphasis on replayability are staples of the roguelike genre, Hades takes it all a step farther by tying these mechanics so intricately to the game's overarching narrative--which is phenomenal, by the way--that the entire experience feels harmonic. With razor-sharp combat, a bold visual identity that only Supergiant Games could craft up, dazzling characters, and one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all-time, Hades is one of the best games in the past decade--and one you could easily sink a hundred hours into. Though the game is currently listed at $25, it frequently goes on sale for $7.50. -- Jessica Cogswell Stardew Valley I might have grown up with Harvest Moon, but when someone mentions "farming sims," there's no denying that the first game that comes to my mind is Stardew Valley. At this point, the game is synonymous with the genre, and for good reason. Despite being developed by just one person, Stardew Valley redefines what it means to be a farming sim, delivering the cozy collecting and farming experience we all know and love alongside dungeon-crawling, a story with a surprising amount of lore and absurdity, and plenty of townsfolk drama. Since its release, developer ConcernedApe has rolled out several massive updates to the game, all of which have been free of charge and contribute to this already massive game feeling truly endless. If you're looking for extremely cheap comfort food--the mashed potatoes of gaming, if you will--I highly recommend you pick up Stardew Valley. Especially whenever it drops down to its frequent sale price of $8. -- Jessica Cogswell Fallout 4 Although Fallout 4 might be one of the weaker entries in the series, it still manages to distill and wonderfully package what Bethesda does best: offer players a sprawling, atmospheric sandbox for them to do both wondrous and ridiculous things in. With its emphasis on FPS and crafting elements, Fallout 4 is perfect for those craving semi-mindless joy--for players who want nothing more than to meander around post-apocalyptic Boston while looting, shooting, and crooning along to some good ol' fashioned 1950s radio. In the years since its release, Fallout 4 has amassed quite a large modding community, with some players going so far as to create graphics overhauls and entire expansions for the game. In short, there's never been a better time to play it. And with hundreds of hours of potential gameplay and a current price of just $7, Fallout 4 feels like an easy buy. -- Jessica Cogswell The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth Nowadays you can't browse Steam without bumping into countless roguelites, but back in 2011, The Binding of Issac offered a novel (and disturbing) take on the somewhat-dormant genre. More impressive, however, is how even in the midst of the modern roguelite renaissance, The Binding of Isaac remains a fun yet grueling genre staple that features remarkable mechanical depth. With thousands of possible run combinations and compelling Zelda-meets-twin-stick-shooter action, sinking a few hundred hours into the game is an easy feat--so long as you can stomach it. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, a robust remake of the original game, is generally $15, but has gone on sale for as low as $1.50 just within the last month. -- Jessica Cogswell Monster Train  Many games have been spawned in the wake of Slay the Spire's success, but few, if any, have put as distinct spin on the roguelike deckbuilder genre as Monster Train. You'll defend a three-leveled train from incoming waves of monsters by assigning units to each of those by playing cards, and using additional cards to power them up, debuff foes, launch attacks, and more. There is still a whole lot of game here, with numerous decks, tons of cards, and the inherent randomization of the genre that keeps it feeling fresh over countless hours playing run after run. While its sequel surpasses it, the original remains a terrific experience and sometimes goes on sale for as little as $2.50-$5, making it an absolute steal. –-Chris Pereira  Cyberpunk 2077 When Cyberpunk 2077 launched back in 2020, it was clear that the game was released before it was actually finished. Over the years, however, CD Projekt Red made monumental improvements to the game, not just in fixing the litany of bugs and glitches, but also adding entirely new content and tweaking game systems so it more matched the vision players anticipated when it was first announced. The game is currently back at its regular $60 price, but it goes on sale often, dipping down to $17.50 just last month. Plus, it's available on everything from PC to Nintendo Switch 2. If you really can't get enough of Night City, you can also play the outstanding Phantom Liberty expansion for a cyberpunk-style espionage story. -- Gabe Gurwin Balatro Balatro might look like a poker game out of the NES era, but underneath that deceptive surface, there beats the heart of the ultimate "just one more turn" experience. It's a game that brilliantly transforms poker into a satisfying loop of experimentation and rule-breaking, keeping you glued to your screen with a highly replayable loop of chaotic multipliers and absurdly high numbers. Balatro wants you to shatter the rules of poker, and it gives you all the tools, cards, and upgrades to help you beat the house. It only takes a few minutes to pick up, and once it sinks its hooks into you, don't be too surprised to find yourself awake at night, working toward that perfect run of legally cheating your way to victory. –--Darryn Bonthuys Grand Theft Auto V More than a decade has passed since GTA 5 first debuted, and Rockstar's crime-thriller is still a masterpiece in open-world design. The base game alone is a gripping tale told through three distinct viewpoints and set inside a living city, one where you're free to wander off the beaten path and engage in various activities for dozens of hours. But it's GTA Online that has raised the bar for the franchise, as the MMO sandbox has continued to evolve and grow over the years with a frequent influx of free new content and missions. GTA Online has become one of the biggest third spaces in gaming, and this is one underworld community that's hard to quit. -- Darryn Bonthuys Persona 5: Royal With the largest linear story on this list (well, outside of Final Fantasy XIV, but who can compete with that?), Persona 5: Royal is an extraordinary value. But beyond being a great value, and the sheer enormity of its 120-hour narrative, Persona 5: Royal is also a masterpiece. I'd even go so far as to call it a must-play for RPG enthusiasts, especially those who love time management and life-sim elements, or the over-the-top storytelling and visual stylings associated with anime and manga. And sure, Persona 5 is generally a bit cheaper than Royal, which often goes on sale for around $15-20, but the amount that Royal adds to an already-great game merits whatever the price difference might be. If you're looking for an unforgettable experience that combines the woes of adolescence, turn-based combat, disturbing psychological scenarios, and, last but not least, the power of friendship, you can't go wrong with Persona 5 Royal. -- Jessica Cogswell
Title: We Already Know What GTA 6 Is Going To Be Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 21:17:20 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/we-already-know-what-gta-6-is-going-to-be/ So far, Grand Theft Auto 6 sure looks like a Grand Theft Auto game. There's no denying the level of hype surrounding GTA 6. It's often referred to in various grandiose terms: the most-anticipated game ever (probably), the biggest game launch of the decade (sure), the game that will save the industry (with console prices rising, doubtful). Certainly, expectations are sky-high for a game that is following such a massive commercial success and has been such a long time coming. But does any of that mean it will be the most amazing thing ever? Despite its reputation and incredible level of influence on the gaming world, GTA was never the most amazing game at any point, and its level of success dwarfs the achievements of the games themselves. Even as someone who has enthusiastically played the series since GTA 2, GTA 3 was the only game of the 3D era that I found to be especially revolutionary, catapulting the series to the heights it would eventually reach. Every subsequent game has been an iteration on that formula, which is relatively par for the course with gaming sequels, particularly from a big publisher.  With GTA 6 being hyped to such tremendous levels, though, and being the first new GTA game in 13 years (a span equivalent to the period that saw eight standalone games released in the years preceding GTA 5), is it going to be a massive disappointment if GTA 6 is just another GTA game? Rockstar has been beset by leaks showing gameplay clips (and even a cutscene) of GTA 6 this week. It would be unfair to judge the game based on these looks at it; beyond being heavily compressed and watermarked, we don't know how long ago these clips were sourced, what changes or polish might have been introduced since then, or what groundbreaking features are not being showcased here. These clips are also being released for a deliberate purpose, seemingly pushing Rockstar to reconsider the lack of a disc version and pumping a crypto memecoin. The leaks show nothing particularly noteworthy. There are some intriguing details that have been discovered, such as what appears to be the need to fuel your vehicles, which could lead to some fun emergent moments. But what we've seen otherwise looks exactly like a Grand Theft Auto game. You could tell me this footage was sourced from a GTA 5 mod, and I wouldn't bat an eye. You're able to steal cars, drive around, and generally wreak havoc. Assuming the leaks are real, there's a taser weapon now, which appeals to the Syphon Filter fan in me. But nothing so far looks revolutionary or like it will convince GTA skeptics to jump in, which only reinforces my existing suspicion--based on the first two trailers and GTA's history--that GTA 6 may not have anything truly exceptional to show us when it is finally revealed. Any lack of a wow factor in the leaks could be by design: As the leakers seek to put pressure on Rockstar, they might be intentionally seeking to make people's first real look at gameplay as underwhelming as possible.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwgi4ECJwic But as a longtime player, I would be surprised if this is not, at its core, what GTA 6 is: a new version of a very familiar thing. There will surely be the wrinkles here and there--GTA 5 had its multiple characters and online mode, the latter of which I expect to eventually be overhauled for GTA 6 in dramatic fashion to lean into user-generated content, role-playing, and other elements that can help contribute to Take-Two's recurrent consumer spending pillar that represents an outsized piece of its business.  Delivering an iterative version of GTA 5 is going to be more than enough for a very substantial portion of the audience. There are surely many GTA 5 players who have played few other games since its release 13 years ago, and incremental steps forward--if that's all we get--will be enough to satisfy them. Comfort food isn't such a bad thing, and while I'd love to be amazed by some new conception of what a GTA game can be, I'll still enjoy poking around its sandbox, playing through the story mode, and hopefully taking part in some new online heists, which were by far the standout aspect of GTA 5. The truth is that GTA 6 doesn't need to be mind-blowing. The formula is in place, and coloring inside those lines is a formula for success. GTA 6 was never going to be unrecognizable or revolutionary. You are more than entitled to find that to be a disappointing, underwhelming, or uninspired path and instead opt for something that strives to be unique (Forbidden Solitaire, Denshattack, and Titanium Court are all 2026 gems). But if you're someone who is actively anticipating GTA 6 and are expecting a 13-year wait to equate to an equivalent level of innovation, we didn't need these leaks to tell us you're likely setting yourself up for disappointment.
Title: 15 Great Total-Conversion Mods To Make Your Old Games Feel Brand New Date: Wed, 09 Apr 2025 18:57:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/best-total-conversion-mods/2900-6416/ Gaming has never been more expensive. We're here to investigate why, and help you play more while spending less. Welcome to GameSpot Cheap Week. Total-conversion mods are one of the coolest things about the PC gaming community. Creative and ambitious amateur game developers look at games we love and see things they want to improve, stories they want to tell in that world, and files they want to dig through for missing pieces. Some all-timer games began life as total-conversion mods; Stanley Parable was a Half-Life conversion mod at first, and so was Counter-Strike. Dota was previously called Defense of the Ancients and began life as a (very, very popular) mod for Warcraft 3. DayZ, the multiplayer zombie-survival game, was a mod for Arma III, the complex soldier simulator. All of those games are massive hits in their own rights. Total-conversion mods can introduce an entirely new world to explore with its own story, bring fan-favorite stories and properties into an existing game's framework, or act as a sequel to a game that won't get one anytime soon. Below, we run through some of the best total-conversion mods for a variety of games, including Skyrim, Doom II, FTL, Fallout, and others. For more great ways to spend your time on a PC, check out our picks for the best PC games and best free PC games, as well as the best mods for The Sims 4, Elden Ring, and Stardew Valley. Starfield - Star Wars Genesis Created By: Star Wars GenesisWhere to Download: genesismodlist.com While Starfield didn't quite receive the same warm reception that Skyrim and some of the Fallout games have maintained over the years, it's still a massive game ripe for modding. Case in point is the Star Wars Genesis modlist. This isn't a single mod, but rather is a collection of many mods that add cities and planets, new game mechanics, and new Rebel and Imperial questlines, weapons, and alien races. As a modlist, this is technically a work in progress, but for Star Wars fans, this might be the closest thing you get to a galaxy-traversing, open-ended game, and it looks like a fun one. See Starfield at Fanatical Advertisement Skyrim - Enderal: Forgotten Stories Created By: SureAI Where to Download: ModDB Enderal is an all-timer when it comes to ambitious total-conversion mods. This Skyrim mod takes you to an entirely new world and features a campaign, voice acted by pros with English and German voice tracks, that the developers say should take 30-120 hours to complete. There's a new skill system, new lore, and just about everything else you'd expect from a new game--except it's free. And don't let the development team's name--SureAI--put you off. The team has been making huge game mods since at least 2010 (more on that below), and Enderal came out in 2019, back when AI meant "stuff NPCs do in video games" instead of its more controversial modern definition. For more, check out our list of the best Skyrim mods. See Skyrim at Fanatical Advertisement Skyrim - Falskaar Created By: AlexanderJVelicky Where to Download: NexusMods Falskaar isn't as ambitious as Enderal in sheer scale but is equally daring in its own way, as it was built by one person whose end goal was reportedly to land a job at Skyrim developer Bethesda--which they did. This is a bit more DLC-sized, but it takes you to a brand-new place to explore and presents an interesting storyline that dives into Nordic politics with, again, an almost fully voiced storyline. See Skyrim at Fanatical Advertisement Oblivion - Nehrim Created By: SureAI Where to Download: ModDB Before SureAI--the team behind Skyrim's Enderal total-conversion mod--made that project, it first made Oblivion Nehrim. Released in 2010, this mod takes you to the island of Nehrim, using the Oblivion engine. This game focuses less on a sprawling campaign, though there is one, instead rewarding you for exploration. As one person on Reddit said, Nehrim is "more level design than dialogue," with some truly huge dungeons to explore. See Oblivion at Fanatical Advertisement Fallout 4 - Fallout London Created By: TeamFOLON Where to Download: GOG One of the things fans want the most from the Fallout series is to explore the world outside of the United States. Bethesda game director Todd Howard has said repeatedly that they're committed to exploring the series' unique version of Americana. If you want to venture outside the United States, you'll have to look elsewhere. The newly released Atomfall might scratch this itch as a standalone game, but Fallout fans will want to look to Fallout London, which came out in the latter half of 2024. Fallout London is a massive total-conversion mod for Fallout 4 that takes the story across the Atlantic. This mod rivals the size of a proper sequel and can take 25 or more hours to complete, with players reporting that it can take many more if you want to explore everything. It has huge, game-altering decisions that can result in big story divergences, with a fully voice-acted story. With its setting, much of the Americana falls away, offering its own version of an post-apocalyptic, atomic-age world. Players have described it as being more than a little crash-y, so you'll want to save often, because they also say that it's more than worth wading through that stuff. For more, check out our list of the best Fallout 4 mods. See Fallout 4 Fanatical Advertisement Doom II - Ashes 2063 Created By: Ashes Dev Group Where to Download: ModDB Ashes 2063 uses the open-source Doom engines GZDoom and Freedoom2 to bring us a Doom total-conversion mod that calls to mind the first-person shooters that came in Doom's wake, like Duke Nukem and Blood, with huge open spaces and fast-paced gameplay and, according to the developer, some inspiration from Fallout and Stalker. There are quite a few Doom total-conversion mods out there, and this one stands out as an especially fresh experience for such an old game. See Doom Doom II at Fanatical Advertisement Doom 2 - Wolfenstein: Blade of Glory Created By: Blade of Agony Where to Download: ModDB Doom and Doom II were massive games, but Wolfenstein 3D walked so that the Doom franchise could run. Wolfenstein: Blade of Agony puts you back in the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz, in a brand-new Wolfenstein story inspired by WWII shooters of the '90s and '00s. It features 30 levels across three chapters, complete with interactive NPCs and proper quest items. It features over a dozen new weapons. Setting the supernatural ones aside--no spoilers--there are multiple shotguns, machine pistols, and rifles, all based on actual firearms from World War II. You'll also be able to find a grenade launcher, flame thrower, a minigun, and a rocket launcher. There are also nine enemy types, each with three or four variants compared to just even in Wolfenstein 3D. In other words, there's plenty to do here. Like most other modern Doom mods, Ashes 2063 included, this game runs on the open-source GZDoom engine. See Doom Doom II at Fanatical Advertisement FTL - Multiverse Created By: The Multiverse Team Where to Download: ModDB FTL is a hard game to put down, but even hardcore fans of the game will eventually run out of stuff to do. Good news, spacefarers: FTL Multiverse is here to massively expand the game. This mod features a new story set decades after the original game's tale, in which the Federation and Rebellion have taken the war to other dimensions thanks to the Multiverse Drive. The mod features "nearly 200 new playable ships, over 500 new enemy vessels, over 200 new weapons and drones, and over 30 brand-new sectors to explore" according to the developer. See FTL on Steam Advertisement Total War - Many, Many Total-Conversion Mods Created By: Various Where to Download: ModDB There are simply too many great Total War mods to mention them all here. One fan-favorite is Third Age, a mod that brings Total War to the lands of Middle-earth and features a campaign focused on the War of the Ring. If you want more Lord of the Rings action, there's also Divide and Conquer, which brings its own spin on the Third Age of Middle-earth, and is considered by many fans to be the superior Lord of the Rings mod. Total War Westeros will let you participate in the greatest game, the Game of Thrones. The Elder Scrolls Total War features a variety of factions, and you can pit the Stormcloaks of Skyrim against the ruling Houses of Morrowind to see who would win. If you're more interested in historical conflicts, there's The Great War, which brings all the brutality of the first World War to Total War, while The American Revolution focuses on the United States' war for freedom from the monarchy of England with all the depth you'd expect. See Total War: Medieval II: at Fanatical Advertisement Stellaris - Star Trek: New Civilizations Created By: Walshicus Where to Download: Steam Stellaris is already a sprawling game--reviews for it on Steam are frequently from players with well over 1,000 hours on record. There's plenty to do here. But if you're looking to refresh the game, or maybe you're a long-time Trekkie looking to put their own spin on the Star Trek series, this mod is for you. Star Trek: New Civilizations adds hundreds of new events, anomalies, and crisis chains, as well as new institutions you can use to interact with your empire. You'll get tons of new visuals to enjoy, too, with 860 new ships, 160 species, and a bunch of new megastructures. On top of all of that, this mod streamlines things like the technology tree and economy systems to make for a smoother experience. If you're a Star Trek fan, this one is worth checking out. See Stellaris at Fanatical Advertisement Crusader Kings 2 - A Game of Thrones Created By: CK2:AGOT Development Team Where to Download: ModDB The Crusader Kings series is all about grand strategy--political intrigue, continuing your empire, and winning wars rather than battles. You're a monarch interacting with other monarchs, like it's some kind of game: a game of thrones. Like the base game, Crusader Kings 2, this total-conversion mod isn't about plowing through a hand-crafted campaign. Instead, you'll be playing with and against characters from the books, in a variety of time periods in Westeros history, and creating what-if scenarios to explore. What if Joffrey wasn't the worst? What if that last season of the show had a satisfying story? You get to decide what happens when you play the game of thrones. This total-conversion mod is complete for Crusader Kings 2 and in ongoing development for Crusader Kings 3. See Crusader Kings 2 at Fanatical Advertisement Hearts of Iron 4 - Old World Blues See Hearts of Iron 4 at Fanatical Created By: OWBTeamWhere to Download: Steam The world of Fallout is, largely, a subjective experience--you'll roleplaying the part of a single character, whether in first or third person, most of the time. Even Fallout Tactics still takes place on a relatively small scale. If you want to pull back and look at the wider world of Fallout, though, the Old World Blues mod for Hearts of Iron 4 is a great option. Hearts of Iron 4 is a grand strategy game, pitting entire nations against each other. This is for the nerds among us who can find at least as much engaging gameplay in a spreadsheet as an action scene. You'll spend most of the game looking at a pulled out map showing the political outlines of various factions, rather than facing down an army of individual units. Advertisement Freelancer - Crossfire Created By: SWAT Development Where to Download: ModDB The 2003 game Freelancer was a space-sim game from Chris Roberts, creator of the Wing Commander series and of Star Citizen. Reviews were mixed at the time of release, but the game developed a loyal following that hoped and asked for a sequel that would never come, as the studio, Digital Anvil, was shuttered before such a thing could coalesce. And so fans took it upon themselves to make their own with Freelancer: Crossfire. This mod brings in new graphics and lighting, hundreds of new ships and systems, and of course its own storyline campaign. The mod also improves enemy AI, makes the universe destructible, and adds some of the dynamic world and economy features that Roberts promised in early previews (tell me if you've heard the one where Roberts promises a really ambitious space game before). Advertisement Deus Ex - Nihilum Created By: FastGamerr Where to Download: ModDB Deus Ex Nihilum is a mod for the original Deus Ex game released in 2000. Nihilum is set in an alternate universe from the original game, in 2049. After a terrorist attack on Shenzhen, China, UNATCO sends out their first nano-augmented agent, Mad Ingram, to investigate and prevent a repeat of the disaster. This mod features around 10 hours of gameplay with four hours of new dialogue, 80 new music tracks, and a few new weapons, and more. Deus Ex was a landmark entry for the immersive-sim genre, so it's no surprise that fans of original would want to go back and mine that world for more fun gameplay. Title: Want A Modern Warfare 4 Beta Code? Just Talk Trash Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 19:54:11 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/want-a-modern-warfare-4-beta-code-just-talk-trash/ The creators of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are trying to prove one trash-talking player wrong by giving them a free code to the game's upcoming early-access beta. In response to a Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer trailer posted by CharlieIntel on X, one skeptical player going by TristanSpoof didn't have kind words for what they saw. "This s*** looks awful ngl," they wrote in a quote repost. "Won't be planning on buying until I see it live." https://twitter.com/CallofDutyCM/status/2090128038155464991?s=20 Normally, rude behavior shouldn't be rewarded, but the official CallofDutyCM account took a different approach and clearly saw an opportunity. Instead of fighting fire with fire, the account opted for a "kill them with kindness" strategy. Replying to TristanSpoof's post, the account said a free beta code was on its way. "Well good thing you get to see it live this weekend!," the account said. "DMing you a beta code too if you want to give it a try. Have fun!" It looks like the gesture may have won TristanSpoof over, as they replied with a gif of Leonardo DiCaprio giving a toast. We'll have to wait until this weekend to get TristanSpoof's firsthand impressions on how Modern Warfare 4 plays, but if nothing else, it looks like the olive branch was well received. Unfortunately for the folks behind Call of Duty, now anyone with a negative option (or maybe even those with a positive one who just want a free code) might now be keen to sling insults about the game online in the hope for a similar result. As it turns out, asking nicely might net you a code as well, as CallofDutyCM also looks to have given a user by the name Sly The Sledgehammer a code in response to Sly calling the account "goated" and simply asking for one.  For those diving into the early-access beta this weekend, there's a number of beta rewards that will carry over to the full version of Modern Warfare 4, including an operator skin and a weapon blueprint. In a first for a Call of Duty beta, Modern Warfare 4's will also include access to a campaign mission.  Modern Warfare 4's early-access beta runs August 21-25 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, with an open beta to follow August 28-September 1. The open beta will also be playable on Switch 2, though the early-access one will not be. Preordering is a guaranteed way to get into the early-access beta. Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, and unlike Black Ops 6 and 7, won't be available on Xbox Game Pass.

Title: Class Is in Session: GeForce NOW Levels Up Linux, Chromebooks and More Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 13:00:33 +0000 Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/geforce-now-thursday-linux-native-app/ GeForce NOW is giving cloud gaming an extra-credit upgrade just in time for back-to-school season. The native Linux app for GeForce NOW is officially out of beta. GeForce NOW is also delivering new cloud optimizations that make Frame Generation feel even more responsive while streaming. On top of that, Performance members will see higher frame rates in demanding games thanks to a CPU performance adjustment.  Plus, learn how GeForce NOW can add high-performance GeForce RTX gaming to the Chromebooks students already rely on for school – and how eligible new owners can take advantage of Chromebook Fast Pass. It all adds up to more ways to move from assignments to adventures across nearly any device. The only homework left is to decide what to play. This week, nine new games join the GeForce NOW library. The Cloud Gets Extra Credit GeForce NOW keeps getting better. The native Linux app for GeForce NOW has officially graduated from beta. Built on months of community feedback, the release focuses on performance, stability and polish while continuing to support Ubuntu 24.04 and later. A new Flatpack repository makes getting started and receiving future updates even easier. Visit the download page for more information and instructions. The cloud handles the rendering, so Linux gamers can tap into the latest GeForce RTX performance while staying on their preferred setup — without local hardware upgrades, compatibility headaches or complicated workarounds. Smooth gameplay makes the grade. GeForce NOW has also optimized DLSS Frame Generation in the cloud, reducing latency and making games feel more responsive. The improvements are especially noticeable when streaming at 60 or 120 frames per second in 1440p and 4K, helping every mouse movement and camera pan feel more immediate. Performance members will also enjoy additional server software optimizations to improve frame rates in select CPU-intensive games, helping demanding titles run more smoothly while delivering an even better gameplay experience. The cloud-side upgrade happens automatically, with nothing for members to install or configure, and at no additional cost. From Class Mode to Game Mode Class dismissed. Game on. Chromebooks already in backpacks can double as a PC gaming powerhouse, with GeForce NOW giving everyday school setups extra credit.  Chromebooks handling lectures, group projects and browser tabs can transform into high-performance GeForce RTX gaming PCs in just a few clicks. When class is out, open a supported browser or app and stream more than 2,000 supported PC games from existing libraries, with the cloud handling the heavy lifting. The same flexibility extends to Macs, Surface devices, everyday laptops, Steam Deck and mobile devices. Plus, eligible new Chromebook and Chromebook+ owners can claim a year of GeForce NOW at no cost with Chromebook Fast Pass, with priority access and no ads.  Study. Stream PC games. Same device.  Ready for the Weekend Follow the chain of command, streaming from the cloud. Title: Best in Class: Stream PC Games and Study on the Same Laptop With GeForce NOW Date: Thu, 30 Jul 2026 13:00:20 +0000 Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/geforce-now-thursday-back-to-school-2026/ Back to school means balancing assignments, deadlines and downtime. GeForce NOW makes it easy to have it all. With cloud gaming, everyday laptops used for class can also become GeForce RTX-powered gaming setups.  When it’s time to switch from studying to gaming, members can jump into Halo: Campaign Evolved, as GeForce NOW is bringing one of the gaming world’s most celebrated titles to nearly any device through the cloud, alongside eight total games joining the GeForce NOW library this week. From A+ to AAA Gaming  This back-to-school season, the easiest upgrade isn’t replacing laptops in backpacks. It’s unlocking even more from these same laptops, from creating to gaming. With a GeForce NOW membership, Chromebooks, Macs and Surface devices can become GeForce RTX-powered gaming PCs in the cloud. The GeForce NOW library features thousands of supported PC games, letting members stream titles they already own from digital stores like Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass and Epic Games Store in just a few clicks. The cloud keeps games up to date and ready to play, making it easy to jump into a match between classes, after homework or whenever there’s free time. Time spent waiting on downloads, patches and installs becomes time spent in game instead. The Ultimate membership enables best-in-class experiences by delivering 5080-class performance in the cloud with NVIDIA DLSS, ray tracing and NVIDIA Reflex technologies for responsive, visually rich gameplay — all on the hardware gamers already own. A creator known as “Menguiny” recently put this to the test after picking up a MacBook Neo. GeForce NOW turned the laptop — usually the creator’s go-to for editing videos and everyday work — into a top-notch gaming machine, too. Another creator, “TechWithSeong” highlighted that same versatility GeForce NOW offers. Rather than juggling separate devices for work and gaming, he used GeForce NOW Ultimate to stream supported PC games across the devices he already owns — from a MacBook used for editing to gaming on the go with handheld devices. Gamers can start with a day pass and experience all the premium benefits without a monthly commitment. Plus, the cost of a day pass can be applied toward a first membership purchase — it’s like earning a little extra credit along the way. Everyone, at Their Stations Needlers never looked so sharp. Experience the Master Chief’s iconic journey on GeForce NOW in Halo: Campaign Evolved — a modernized remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign — rebuilt with high-definition visuals, updated cinematics and refined gameplay. Whether discovering Halo for the first time or returning after 25 years to finish the fight, it’s as the Master Chief says: “We’re just getting started.” Crash-land on the mysterious ringworld alongside Cortana and uncover great secrets while battling overwhelming Covenant forces. Fight through the rebuilt campaign, then continue the adventure with three brand-new missions featuring the Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson. Expanded weapons, iconic vehicles, hijackable Wraith tanks and optional Skull modifiers offer even more ways to play. Suit up across PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, handhelds, mobile devices, TVs and more with GeForce NOW Ultimate, powered by GeForce RTX 5080-class performance in the cloud. Experience Halo with NVIDIA DLSS, ray tracing and NVIDIA Reflex technologies delivering higher frame rates and ultralow latency that keep every firefight feeling responsive and worthy of a Spartan. From solo gaming to online co-op modes, GeForce NOW cloud saves let members log in and pick up exactly where they left off across supported devices — no lengthy downloads, extra storage space or expensive hardware upgrades required. The only thing left to carry is the mission. Title: Inside the brutal puzzles of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival  Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 12:15:07 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/19/inside-the-brutal-puzzles-of-clive-barkers-hellraiser-revival/ It’s dark. The walls are oppressively grey, spikey and close. And there’s a disturbing noise of chattering teeth that sounds like it’s coming from, well, everywhere. Then, I see him. Flesh warped, eyeless sockets sunken, mouth wide, teeth full. The Chatterer – the source of the ever-present and unnerving noise. Player character, Aidan, runs away, but seconds later Chatterer remerges in front of him in a crackle of electricity. Aidan tries another path of escape and Chatterer again fizzles into view. Down a seething red, fleshy corridor and the chattering figure zaps in front of him again. But there is a way to escape, you just need to know how. Play Video This is just part of my introduction to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, a first-person survival horror hitting PlayStation 5 on October 8. And while this is a fairly straightforward puzzle element that I’m being shown, there are far more elaborate and equally disturbing ones that Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin is eager to walk me – or more accurately in this case, run – through. A labyrinth of terror Although Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival features a number of firearms and weapons, that’s not the purpose of the demonstration I’m immersed in. The focus is very much on how the game aims to test your nerve through its reality warping environments and the mysteries they hold, all encased with the gruesome tension the series is famous for. In fact, Hellraiser is a franchise which doesn’t necessarily lend itself to combative action, given its psychological and deeply disturbing investigation of the lines between pleasure and pain. To translate that into a game was one of the challenges faced by the teams at Mad Head Games and Saber Interactive, aiming to give the puzzles an appropriate edge. “We use the Genesis Configuration – a puzzle box – at the centre of things,” explains Vid. “Mysterious puzzle boxes are literally key to everything in Clive Barker’s universe, so it writes itself in terms of helping to craft puzzles and how to manipulate the world. We have a background in adventure games and hidden object puzzle titles, so we took our experience from those, but we want to make sure we have a narrative purpose for puzzles wherever we can.” The earlier example of our encounter with Chatterer is a clear sign of that bleeding of narrative and puzzles, as is another environmental teaser where Aidan is wandering through his house near the start of the game. At first it appears normal – but twisted little elements, such as photos on a wall being crooked or distorted soon become clear. And trying to escape the various rooms only leads to them repeating. The only way to solve this tormenting loop? By turning back instead of trying to move forward, which changes the entire setting. “The labyrinth Aidan is trapped in is intertwined with the real world,” says Vid. “So in the case of the looping rooms, the environment is almost trying to tell Aidan something, to get him to change his perspective, and make the player figure out another approach to what they might have been doing.” Controlling the Genesis Configuration Learning lessons is a fundamental part of any horror story, which makes Vid’s point fit smartly into the game, aping one of the mainstay themes of the genre no matter the medium – you learn or you die. Be it reversing your course to escape the looping room or outmanoeuvring Chatterer by discovering which corridor he doesn’t teleport in front of you in, understanding the importance of finding unconventional routes is crucial. Hints are offered by the labyrinth itself, although for some of the more traditional puzzles, like opening a safe via a sliding picture lock, clues can be something far less intimidating, such as discovering a diagram on a desk. But a chunk of progressing through Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is through using the Genesis Configuration itself. While it can channel power for offensive abilities like setting enemies on fire, Vid reveals how it’s essential for overcoming many of the present environmental puzzles.  Some puzzles have clear binary solutions. One example is using the Genesis Configuration to rotate a giant wheel, which in turn would realign the narrow walkways Aidan found himself on within a spike-laden room to plot a safe route through. Another demoed its transformative properties: we stood in a courtyard hub, with three main gates. Each one could only be opened by retrieving a statue’s missing item – such as an appropriately macabre tongue or hand – and then changing the Genesis Configuration into the correct shape to act as a key. But there are others which have multiple ways of solving them. What those are, the studio remain tight-lipped, keen for players to discover themselves.  And while many revolve around traversal, the labyrinth itself, and all the horror that await within, there are a few incidental and familiar parts for survival horror fans. “We have classic lock pick mechanism puzzles as well [such as]safe combinations which reward you with useful items, like crafting resources, ammo, some nice upgrades, or even like a new weapon,” says Vid. “And you have to manage your inventory in a similar way to the Resident Evil games.” Inspiration outside of hell Between these types of traditional survival horror puzzles and more surreal, M.C. Escher inspired interiors that help fashion the environment, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival is shaping up to be something fans will appreciate. The development team – fans themselves – also had the advantage of Clive Barker himself advising from its initial conception and Doug Bradley reprising his role as Pinhead from many of the movies, to help keep them on track. “They were a huge help, especially in giving us small details,” says Vid. “The pressure to make something to honor the franchise is always there, but it’s been alleviated by the positive response from the fans so far.” Prepare for oblivion With a campaign that Vid suggests could take over 12 hours to complete, Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival aims to deliver a sharp experience that captures the visceral and psychological intensity of its source material. And if you own a PS5 Pro, you can expect higher graphic settings and PSSR sSupport to hone in on the horror. Can your chattering nerves handle a piercing face to face with Pinhead and his cenobites? Find out on October 8 when Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival launches on PS5, available for pre-order now.

Title: New NBA 2K27 gameplay details on The City, co-op, MyNBA eras, and more Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2026 18:00:23 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/18/new-nba-2k27-gameplay-details-on-the-city-co-op-mynba-eras-and-more/ Enter the World of 2K and get your competitive fix with the NBA 2K27 Preseason Breakdown: Game Reveal recap! Live from the Inuit Dome in Los Angeles, CA, NBA 2K hosted a 45-minute livestream detailing the most exciting updates and in-game enhancements coming in NBA 2K27. In case you missed it, we’ve got you covered. Read on to learn more about what you missed from the August 18 showcase. Play Video Balanced gameplay Gameplay in NBA 2K27 strives for the most balanced experience to date, introducing meaningful new offensive tools like Step-Through Up-and-Unders and reworked defensive systems like improved Hands-Up Shot Contests to deliver a rewarding experience on both ends of the floor.  Powered by ProPlay, the game continues to push the limits of courtside authenticity by leveraging advanced machine learning capabilities. When you take the hardwood in 2K27, you’ll see heightened fidelity in animations and the real-time evolution of on-court adjustments. As players around the league find new ways to create separation, we’re finding new ways to innovate, giving hoopers of all skill levels the ultimate playground to prove they belong. Introducing a co-ed City For the first time, we’re introducing a co-ed City, where you can create a female MyPlayer and compete in The City alongside our global community of hoopers. All MyPlayers, male and female, are built on the exact same framework. Your height, badges, attribute ratings, and wingspan are strictly determined by the MyPlayer build you create, not your appearance. All game modes within The City are completely co-ed, with full access to The REC, The Theater, Street Kings, Park, Proving Grounds, Ante-Up, Starting Five, plus the all-new Crew HQ and Casual Corner. One thing to note: Female MyPlayers are a City-only experience. New environments to hoop in The Rec, The Theater, Ante-Up, and Seasonal Parks all feature brand-new environments. Based on community feedback, The Rec now rotates randomly between five unique environments available right at launch: High School Gym Outdoor Court Private Gym Crowded Arena Season-Themed Venue Builder customization & new Badge Tokens The biggest game-changer is the introduction of Badge Tokens, which you’ll use to equip Badges. In the Builder, you can see in real time how your selected size and position affect which Badges you qualify for and how many tokens each Badge will cost. The Builder provides real-time feedback, showing you the exact tokens required as you adjust your attributes.  There are 53 Badges in 2K27, including 19 brand-new Badges built to create a more balanced playing field. Badge synergy Unleash your full potential with the all-new Synergy system, the next evolution of Badges and boosts.  Synergy slots provide a +1 boost, or a massive +2 boost to your Badges. They are broken into two parts: Fuse and Reaction. Fuse Badges receive a permanent +1 or +2 boost for the entire game, pushing that Badge beyond its current tier to maximize its potential, even up to Legend tier.  Reaction Badges are directly paired with Fuse Badges. The effect is triggered automatically once you’ve activated your Fuse Badge a set number of times during a game. Once triggered, the Reaction Badge receives the same +1 or +2 boost for the rest of the game. Exchange without limits For the first time in MyTeam, you can exchange any of your Player Cards (Free Agent cards excluded), even cards earned from Season level rewards, for elite rewards. Every single card you earn, pull, or unlock is a meaningful asset toward building an unstoppable lineup. Even when you complete a Collection for a Collection Reward, cards will now become unauctionable rather than locked in, meaning they can still be used in The Exchange after being used to get a Collection Reward. MyNBA Legacy: Build a 100-Year Dynasty The headline addition to MyNBA in NBA 2K27 is MyNBA Legacy, a single-player, player-locked mode that bridges the gap between running the front office and dominating on the hardwood. Choose any player in the Modern Era, earn experience to upgrade their Attributes and Badges, and create a legend. Whether you’re committed to writing the next century of NBA history, or looking for a casual sandbox experience, MyNBA Legacy has something for everyone. MyCareer Eras For the first time in MyCareer, you can choose to step outside the modern NBA and build your career in one of five historical eras. We took the foundation of MyNBA Eras and brought it directly into MyCareer, allowing you to insert your MyPlayer into the exact moments that defined basketball history. Compete across five iconic eras: The Magic vs. Bird Era The Jordan Era The Kobe Era The LeBron Era The Steph Era Co-op MyCareer We’re bringing a massive community request to life: for the first time ever, you can invite a friend with NBA 2K27 to play co-op multiplayer directly in your MyCareer. This is made possible by your Running Mate, Trace Miller—a custom teammate you meet in the G League who stays with you all the way through your NBA career. When Trace is introduced, you choose one of nine build templates that feature shades of NBA superstars and earn points through gameplay to upgrade his attributes, Badges, and playstyle.  Your co-op partner takes control of Trace exactly as you’ve built him, and you both earn your own separate, full amounts of VC and Season XP.  Trace is the ultimate Running Mate, helping you unlock your full potential on the court. Grab your Crew and hit the courts in The City early by pre-ordering NBA 2K27 Deluxe Edition or Ultra Edition to receive up to 9 days of Early Access*, starting August 26. *Early access begins at 9:00am PT, August 26. Availability may vary by region and time zone.
Title: Meet the Lovecraftian monstrosities of The Sinking City 2, out today on PS5 Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2026 14:00:44 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/18/meet-the-lovecraftian-monstrosities-of-the-sinking-city-2-out-today-on-ps5/ Hi everyone, my name is Evgeny Maloshenkov, and I’m responsible for creature design at Frogwares, the team behind The Sinking City 2. When we started working on the sequel back in 2023, we knew we wanted to take the series in a new direction. The original The Sinking City was an open-world Lovecraftian detective adventure. But for the sequel, we went full force into semi-open-world survival horror, putting a much greater emphasis on combat, exploration, and survival, and of course, all still wrapped in that Lovecraft gloom. Play Video Investigation is still present, but now it’s an optional layer for players who want to dig deeper into Arkham’s mysteries. And those who do will be rewarded with useful knowledge, resources, shortcuts, and other useful rewards. The new stand-alone story – so you don’t need to know the original to enjoy this one-  takes place in Arkham after a mysterious flood engulfs the city. Eventually, with waters rising relentlessly, the population had to be evacuated, leaving behind only a handful of barely sane survivors and the Eldritch abominations that arrived with the flood. So with combat playing such an important role in The Sinking City 2, we thought it would be fun to take a closer look at five of our favourite enemies and how they evolved from early concepts into the creatures you’ll encounter in the game. Slither Worms and Abominations The Slither are among the most common enemies you’ll encounter in Arkham, and they were one of the first creatures we defined for the game. From the beginning, we knew we didn’t want “just another zombie.” Instead, we imagined the Slither as worm-like deep-sea parasites, ranging from finger-sized creatures to worms as long as an arm. Individually, they are barely sentient, but when they gather into colonies, they form a hive mind capable of controlling human corpses in service of Yog-Sothoth. One of our biggest design questions was: What does a corpse look like when it is being controlled by something that has never used a human body before? The worms control the body indirectly, moving muscles themselves from the inside and so they do so with less than 100% precision. We tried to show that through animations and behaviour  shoulders become dislocated, and limbs move in awkward, erratic ways.We also imagined the colony gradually “learning” how to operate its new body, resulting in tangled legs, overextended arms and strange little practice movements. Those ideas became the foundation for the two stages of Slither infestation, with the creature’s appearance and behaviour changing as the colony grows stronger and more confident. Stygian Harvester It might be small and relatively fragile, but that doesn’t make it harmless. Stygian Harvesters are dangerous because of their speed, numbers and ability to surprise the player. They dodge attacks, set up ambushes, and retreat into hiding when threatened, waiting for the right moment to strike again. The creature moves using long human arms ending in hands. This allows it to squeeze through tight spaces, cling to its surroundings and move in ways that feel distinctly wrong. It prefers darkness, where it can remain hidden and turn the environment itself into part of the ambush. Acheronian Juggernaut The Acheronian Juggernaut returns from the original game, and for a very simple reason: we still love its design. The creature looks like multiple bodies have been fused into one enormous, grotesque mass. It has six arms, six legs, and a huge open maw stretching from its head down through its torso. It can even swallow an entire human body and hold it inside while it slowly decomposes. The Acheronian is incredibly powerful and resilient, although its size makes it one of the slower enemies. Originally found in Oakmont, the largest Wylebeast in the city has now made its way to Arkham. Because we were already so happy with its visual design, we kept the changes relatively minimal. Instead, we totally redesigned its behaviour and attacks, with this version much better suited for creating a formidable enemy that will make you sweat in combat. Lethian Revenant Originally known simply as the Lethian, the Lethian Revenant is a human that transforms into a humanoid Wylebeast. The infection leaves the creature visibly diseased and unstable, but its most disturbing feature is its head. It splits open vertically, allowing the Revenant to spit blobs of bacterial fluid at the player from a distance. Its behaviour reflects its physical condition. The Revenant appears to be in constant pain and avoids direct confrontation whenever possible, relying on ranged attacks and retreating behind cover. For The Sinking City 2, we rebuilt the creature from scratch. Its model and textures were completely remade, while some animations from the original game were reused and expanded. We also reworked its wounds to create a much more fleshy appearance, with torn skin, exposed muscle, and dark pus oozing from its body. Deep One Raider No Lovecraftian game would be complete without Deep Ones! These ocean-dwelling creatures are humanoid in shape but distinctly fish-like in appearance. They can survive on land for extended periods and are biologically immortal, dying only through violence or accident. The Deep One Raider is a terrifying close-range opponent. It possesses immense physical strength and devastating claw attacks, but what makes it particularly unsettling is the way it moves. It can dodge in strange, inhuman ways, drop onto all fours and suddenly burst into a sprint before knocking its victim to the ground. Welcome to the Flood We’re so happy to say that The Sinking City 2 is out now on PlayStation 5! Getting here has been quite a journey. Making a game is difficult under normal circumstances, and doing it with a team in Ukraine while a war continues around us has presented challenges we could never have anticipated. There have been struggles along the way, but seeing the game finally in players’ hands makes us incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished. Thank you so much for reading, and we hope to see you in the flood!

In the process, we're told, several of the project's staff are being reassigned within Sony's gamedev empire, even as a small team of Guerrilla Games work on the next "proper" singleplayer Horizon game. You'll hopefully have read Jeremy's glowing review, in which he calls the new Soulslike RPG "an incredible second outing that capitalises upon the potential of the first Mortal Shell and brings forth nostalgic memories of DOOM, Heretic, Hexen, and other PC gaming gems." Now, let us speak of difficulty thresholds, hotfix patches, and turning the tables on enemies so badassedly that you accidentally pinch their weapons. Read more
Title: STALKER 2 gets serious performance and visual upgrades with its 2.0 update, testing confirms, polishing up one of the biggest flawed gems in FPS games Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 13:30:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/stalker-2-gets-serious-performance-and-visual-upgrades-with-its-20-update-testing-confirms-polishing-up-one-of-the-biggest-flawed-gems-in-fps-games I don’t begrudge anyone who’s waited to try STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl until it got its technical defects fixed. They’re still wrong, obviously - an absorbing and eerily atmospheric survival FPS is still an absorbing and eerily atmospheric survival FPS when it has the structural integrity of baked beans. But it was spectacularly broken at launch, and although nearly two years of patches have swatted countless bugs and beefed up the series’ signature A-Life NPC simulation, it’s remained a heavyweight GPU-puncher on general performance. Thank the Zone, then, for the 2.0 update, which rolls out tomorrow in tandem with the also-good Cost of Hope expansion. It ambitiously migrates STALKER 2 to a newer, sleeker version of Unreal Engine 5, and makes sweeping (though handcrafted) changes to lighting and environmental deets. Based on what I’ve played, the result is both a better-looking game and a better-performing one. So get in here, stalker - there’s never been a better time to have your skeleton melted out by an anomalous soap bubble. Read more

The announcement features the maxim: "through the looking glass, we’re chasing a dream of mystery, meaning, and creative play." Hey, I understood that reference! Sure sounds like an imsim shop to me. Title: STALKER 2: Cost of Hope review: An expanded Zone that begs to be explored, even as its faction war fizzles Date: Wed, 19 Aug 2026 13:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/stalker-2-cost-of-hope-review Like the technical fix-uppery of the 2.0 update it’s launching alongside, STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl’s Cost of Hope expansion arrives with a determinedly furrowed brow; that kind of enthusiastic, if just slightly contrite, look of someone hellbent on righting their own past wrongs. Of course, most of the open-world shooter’s past crimes are long absolved, if not forgiven immediately on the grounds that they were committed amid an actual war. But Cost of Hope does serve as a second chance for this bleak, beautiful, tense, thrilling, imperfectly brilliant game to address certain omissions it made back in 2024 – even if some of these restorations gleam brighter than others.
